Sounds strange. As I assume you don't wear a thumb ring, and have checked for abnormally hard skin on your thumb, it might be your guitar stand(s)? If you're using a wall-stand that would back it up. Does it go over all the neck, or just parts of it?

Seems strange! I would check the guitar stands as suggested by Sollesnes, and also where you lay them down... if you do, when you go to the bathroom or what not. Maybe check the cases too? Since it's wood it can be fixed. It's just a question of refinishing the neck. Could be a project if you have the time, or pay to have it done. I would find the source of the scratches first first though... or you will have to fix them again.

I have the same vertical scratches on my neck. I think you have long nail on your thumb, isn't it? Because I do.

What kind of Ibanez model is it? I owned 2 RG's and never had problems with them when they were set up correctly that is

sounds very strange, is it the varnish that's cracking or are the cracks in the wood?
The wood in a guitar should be dry (dried for years or by special methods), if that drying process wasn't made properly I suspect odd stuff could happen. Maybe what you're experiencing?

Or do you keep your guitar(s) in direct sunlight? Say you kept your old guitar by a sunny window and those cracks appeared, you moved it into a closed to play your steel string guitar and kept it by the same window. Or by a radiator or an air humiditer - i.e too warm, too cold, too dry, too moistius? Any of the above?

I mean, it could happen to ONE guitar and you can blame bad material, but since you had it happen to TWO guitars I must think it's the environment they are in.

You don't have cats, have you?

This is some really misterious story... maybe you lean the guitar against a chair/table sometimes while you practice?
Or you leave it lying horizontally on a chair/bed/table that has some rough edges or stuff that scratches it?

Are your guitar stands soft where they hold the neck?

Hope you find the cause, and let us know, I'm really intrigued.
