Hello,

My name is Janneke and I'm from Holland. I joined CMG last october and started playing guitar. Yes, I'm an absolute beginner. Cmg is a great place to be and I have learned a lot al ready!! And I have got the VIRUS!!!

I also bought an Ibanez startersset about 4 month ago and it plays nice. But the frets are already getting worn out a bit, scratches and little holes. I went back to the store but there was nothing wrong with it, my Gio just isn't made of the most durable materials. It is possible to flatten them out or to replace them, but it will cost me money. Is it worth the trouble or is it better to save it up for a new guitar? For a new guitar I have a budget of €500,-- and no idea what to buy. Has anybody any suggestions what to do?

I like playing blues, funk and a bit of jazz ....... in the near future wink.gif

Hello and welcome to GMC smile.gif

You can buy pretty good guitar for 500EUR if you are a beginner. Try Fender Squier if you like blues, funk and some jazz.

Hello

Welcome to GMC (Another Dutchie biggrin.gif)

I think you gonna like it a lot.

For a new guitar just go to your local guitar shop and try some axe you like.

After you have tried one in your local store maybe you can check for a second hand one on marktplaats.nl or Ebay.

Somethimes you can find a good fender stratocaster which are good for blues and funk for reasonable price (€750)

What kind of amp have you got?

Welcome to the site Janneke smile.gif

For your style of music any strat-type guitar would suit well. I would suggest you look for e.g. a good squier strat, but most importantly try a couple of different guitars in a shop just to feel and hear them, and I am sure you will be able to make some differentiation what you like and what not.

I have an Ibanez GTA15R amp. When the gain is on a higher level then 2 I get strange, crappy sound. A bit nasty I'm not sure it is the amp or the guitar.

Okay that is good for playing at home.

When you buy a new guitar try this with your amp to get a good compare

Welcome to GMC Janneke, make yourself at home! smile.gif

Regarding new guitar, I agree with Fran, I think getting a MIM Stratocaster (Made In Mexico) would be a pretty good solution for blues funk and even jazz some day, why not!

If you like the sound of single coil pickups than Strat would be a good choice, if you like the sound of humbuckers then possibly check out Epiphone Les Paul guitars. They hold a good value as well.

Regarding the frets, you can try to do a fret evening/polishing job with some local guitar tech, it shouldn't cost too much and if done properly it should save you a lot of trouble with that guitar.

If you need anything else, just ask, we'll try to help. Cheers.

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato
