Have you ever wrote an odd time riff in 9/4? I composed my first 9/4 riff today. It's also syncopated!
http://soundcloud.com/fireball100/9-4-time-signature-theme I've written 7/8 timed riffs, but never something as weird as this. I started out with wanting to create a 9/4 riff, and plotted the kick hits matching my ideas. After tweaking and listening, I began finalizing the riff. I purposely accented different parts of the beat, so the weird syncopated feel against the drums would be obvious. It took me like 50 plays to get it pick strokes down. Then another 25 or so to get it comfortable and sounding natural. Who knows, I probably really played it 100 times! I then began adding the other drums hits like cymbals, snare, and toms. I kept practicing with the bass midi already plotted. That really helped me sync up the riff to play it in time. (I guess you could call this 9/4 because 9/8 would be a faster count, right? It's 116 bpm. This will probably be an Analyzed Within song, because this is only a snippet of a greater part. I am tuned to Gb E A D Gb B. That's basically Drop A, with the low A at a Gb like the second string. Anyway... Share your odd time riffs! -Brandon |

Wow! What a great way to challenge yourself on a difficult timing exercise. Nice job. Which drum program are you using?
