Hello! I just found out Microsoft decided to stop supporting Windows 7 in 1 year's time. I've been using it for 3 years or so and I absolutely love it! That doesn't mean it will suddenly stop working, I had used Windows XP for a few years after MS dropped it and I'll probably do the same thing here.

The thing is, game and program developers will stop writing builds that support this system as well - that's why I changed from XP in the first place. When that happens, I think I'll swap to either Linux or get a Macbook as a work station and keep my current PC for other uses.

I think W7 doesn't support Dx12 that seems to be the thing now.

Seeing how Macbooks are widely used for making music, it's gonna be my random choice, probably.

What are your thoughts? Are you using more modern system, like 8, 8.1 or 10?

if you loved windows 7 you definitely love windows 10.
Windows XP used to be great. Then they came up with Windows vista. A lot of people did not like it because they added so many security checks
thats things would stop working and you wouldn't be able to figure out why. Many people wanted to get back to windows XP.
Windows 7 was again great because again it was as easy to use as the XP and at the same time had every enhancements that vista had.
The same is true for windows 10. i.e you get the enhancements but they have made it user friendly too like 7 or XP.
The Mac in my view is nothing as compared to the windows when it comes to being user friendly. I can never get as comfortable with mac or linux
as i have been with windows.

My luthier jumped to mac this summer, he regrets it so much. Every button/option you're used to on windows is placed somewhere else or works completely unrelated.

XP was great, used it very long I think like 3 machines. Now using 7 and as happy as XP. I didn't jump on 10 cause it takes 2-3 years in the audio world to feel safe as new products won't generate too much bugs, so its a good time now to use win 10 but I'll wait to buy a new computer for that.

One of my university classrooms has W10 on all computers in it. Tbh, I didn't like the experience at all and eventually started bringing a borrowed laptop to the classes. I don't like the interface, to begin with. I can't see myself using it anytime in the future. I don't care about the updates, so I imagine I'll be able to use it for few more years, until the software won't run on W7. My experience with Mac during high school was much better, so I might try it again smile.gif

I have absolutely no regrets going from Windows XP to 7 and then 10. I tried Vista when it came out and used it for a while on my laptop, but I wasn't happy with that. In the beginning Windows 10 was a struggle in some aspects, but I really have no issues with it anymore. Everything works, runs smooth and so on.

To me, Mac experience was okay, so I'm more neutral than for or against it. It's true it takes time to get used to the differences but some people like it more.

I just found out there are some mods that make the 10 more similar to 7, at least in the visual aspect. I find those large single-colored rectangular icons somewhat disturbing. I also liked how in 98, 2000, and XP I could tinker and mod the system files and certain structures to my liking. Windows 10 gives me an impression that most of those functions are hidden and unavailable. In that aspect, Linux seems more flexible.

Yup. Probably time for an upgrade smile.gif All your devices should be supported. Should be fairly painless. I say that now of course smile.gif Lots of windows users here so plenty of help around.
If you do switch to a mac, don't get one older than 2012. They are about to declare all of the pre 2012 macs "legacy" which means they can't receive any new software updates including security patches.
