In a comment to my blog post, RobM suggests that I get a metronome. Is this something that I, as a complete beginner, should get right away to do things "right" from the start? If so, any suggestions on what to get?

Absolutely Henrik, using metronome from the start is something you can achieve a lot from it.
But also I must confess that I didn't use it a lot during my beginner age, and that's because it was quite hard to get even strings for guitar So I played along with tune or track all the time, and wasted many hours I guess . Final conclusion, metronome, yes. -------------------- Youtube

+1 with Matt and Muris Henrik. It's never to soon to practice with a metronome for developing a sense of time and it can help you track your progress with regards to speed picking etc.
