GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ My First Learnt Gmc Lesson :)

Ok so I'm very lazy and I never practice any lessons here at GMC I only ever write songs when I pick up a guitar so I decided to practice this lesson as part of the competition that is currently on for the Beginner challenge. This is by no means perfect and I hope to perfect it before I record video live for the competition entrance.
A few points. The guitar pro tab that Carlos gives is different to what he plays and the backing track is longer than what he plays AND the guitar pro file lol so it seems to finish early but I'm positive I do the final run in the correct place. I know my bends are weak which is annoying but here goes. I did my best 
Any comments off anyone would be awesome

Well I won't analyze the whole playing, but I am also learning it a bit now, and I must say that You already play it good, and will nail it soon:)

sounded exactly like the lesson in my ears Carlos has way better tone and control than me lol. I sound like an irritated wasp

Well, I guess that You don't mute other strings as he does ( for me it is magic:/ ) but still I say that You play it good. More self confidence OC;)

I'm looking forward to your take. I really am poor at muting strings. I learnt guitar idolising Kurt Cobain and he didn't do that sort of thing much and you don't need to do it much in grunge as it's a really raw garage feel.

Was pretty good my friend Your tone was OK, the only thing, that I would add to your sound was some reverb/delay and maybe a falling rain on the backing
Your playing was almost flawless (only instructors are flawless:P we are here to get better, 'aight?), only thing, I would add was a bit more intense vibrato on some places.. then it would be the best
But overally great

I do need to work on it for sure but like you said we are here to learn and improve on guitar. I hope I record more lessons in the near future as it shouldn't have took me a year to bother to learn one lesson lol

Hey friend!! Thank you for choosing one of my lessons!! Really achieving this..
My advice is the next:
you must play with more feeling .. the vibratos must be perfect,only develops these things .. and really you will achieve it!!
I am very surprised for as you play with my song! Nothing is impossible!!

Cheers man. I really need to get my vibrato better. I am trying on the vibrato front and it's a good lesson to improve on this. It's a great lesson so hopefully I can improve on it and record a video

on topic: i dont think i can say anything that haven't already been said.. I think it is a very nice take..
I'd say: Keep recording what you do.. Great way to notice progress..

I think that sounds very good OC, tone is very good and smooth. Vibrato and bending is good, but with a couple of hours of focused practice it can be great sounding. ALso you played the whole piece cleanly and that is very important. Very good mate.

I don't know about me having knowledge lol I'm not in the mentoring program unfortunately as I have only just recently bought a high quality webcam. Hopefully if there is opportunity to take part in a few months if it is successful I will hopefully join

I got a Logitech Quickcam Sphere AF. It cost me £75 ($150) but man is it worth it. It's a really high quality web cam and the best web cam you can get really before you get to camcorders. It's ideal for conferencing but I'm not sure on the quality for lessons but then again I'm not an expert on lighting arrangement which is key to a high quality video also. Here is a link to the system and some information. I highly recommend it though.

Ok.
In my opinion, your tone is way too dry.
When you combine a dry tone with a much too fast vibrato, it almost sounds out of tune.
Positives are that you obviously nailed the notes, and your timing was superb!

Cheers for the feedback. Sorry I don't know what dry tone means though. How would I change that? Does that mean it's empty or what? People have said that before to me but I never know what it means fully.

Also what would people say is a step up from this solo in the way of melodic soloing? This is a 2/10 so I'd like a 3 or 4/10 for the next one I try. I want to keep focused on fairly simple melodic solo ideas

Hey man, I even liked that little noise at the end when you (accidentaly?) touched the strings, it sort of gave a nice contrast compared to the atmospheric solo.

Sounds like you have the timing right. I am not sure what Kjutte means by the dry sound but I would describe it more as a thin sound which I mean as lack of sustain on some of the notes as if you are hitting some of the notes just tentatively. Part of this could be the guitar but I think it may be about how you pick the notes - perhaps try a slightly heavier touch (I play the same way but as I get more confident with practice - and after I learn the timing - I can start playing with a heavier touch changing emphasis on some notes).
One way you can do this is to try using pinch harmonics on some of the notes and then toning them down if they are too much later - and don't worry about the timing too much at first when you concentrate on making each note sing. With the improved tone and your already good timing of the piece, it will come together very shortly. When this happens, you'll be itching to play more and more!
Muris just came out with a recent lesson for beginners - I think it was a harmonic scale piece for beginners and I think you will find it has similar challenges to Carlos piece. Trond's Am solo for beginners is a good one as well. Try working on more than one similar exercise and you might find that something that you discover in one piece translates well in the others (particularly your tone).

Cheers for the feedback. I have been working on my tone lately and it is better than it was 6 months ago but it is still a long way off where I want it to get to. I will check out the solos you mentioned and give them a shot.
I know if I nail the tone it will give me a huge improvement on my playing currently And I must admit I hate pinch harmonics and never use them. I can do them but I'm really not a fan of them at all.

It is only a 2/10 lesson difficulty to be fair although I'm certain that just isn't the case. It really isn't that simple for a beginner.

You asked me in PM what you could work on next, I would try the same melody with some extra guitar tricks.. Aproach some of the notes with bends and wider vibrato, that might help your playing.
