Hey guys - I have a Vintage Series Strat which I love the looks and feel of but I'm not digging the old school single coils and I'm looking for an upgrade.

I want that sharp strat tone but without the noise and with a nice amount of bite.

I have another strat with Seymour Duncan hot rails which I like but you loose a lot of that strat tone.

I would be using the strat for neoclassical style music and soloing - I was thinking the Yngwie set but I'm not one to buy signature gear and I never really like his tone half the times anyways tongue.gif

Do you guys have experience with anything other than hot rails?

Thanks!

If you want the real 'Strat' bite you have to have single coils.
If you want higher output then you have to put up with some noise.

Maybe try some medium output Duncans like this ... http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/elec...ustom_staggere/

*There's a ton of options. I have a Strat with a SD 'little 59' in the bridge and two normal single in the neck and middle. It's def a high-gain machine but I do lose a bit of the 'strattyness' with the high output humbucker in the bridge. It's a trade off. Always is.

Thanks Ken!

Yeah, so many options out there - pros and cons.

I was even thinking the hot noiseless set from Fender but I feel they are slightly overpriced for what you get.

A friend of mine modified his tele and strat with Fender noiseless PU's and I liked them. He bought vintage noiseless for the strat, its not sharp and probably not the most open sounding but does sound nice. Its used on Eric Clapton Strat.

The problem with bright PU's is with distortion they can get ear piercing (too sharp) when picked harder. You'll need to filter the highs before the pedal or amp and it may sound fake then.

Maybe you can narrow your search with noiseless singles that sound bright when in parallel? I can't give you advice but tech support from known brands would be the best place to ask for recommendations. I use parallel with push/pull pots on mid. output humbuckers and results are very convincing for me and friends who know my guitar, should be even better with single noiseless options.

For noiseless, these are sort of the hot ticket. Kinman ... http://www.kinman.com/index.php

There are some DiMarzios that I think are pretty good ... http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/strat/hum-...at/virtual-solo

I've had sets of both. They were quiet and no one would mistake them for anything other than 'strat' pickups but there was something missing (dimensionality if I'm forced to pick an adjective). I ultimately opted for just a real humbucker in the bridge.

The simple answer is to just go ahead and use the pickups that the Yngwie uses and call it a day smile.gif There are a billion options of course. But yeah, the shortest path between two points is still sometimes a straight line smile.gif Get a set of Yngwie pickups and bam.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/yngwie/yjm-fury-pickups.php

You can buy just the bridge or buy a pickguard pre wired with all three pickups. Perfect for neoclassical bits smile.gif Plenty of bite, just the right tone, minimal noise, sorted. smile.gif

To wit, here is our own Chris Brooks with a video featuring these pups.

Thanks Todd!

I've been watching a lot of demos for the YJM's - think I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet on that one wink.gif

It's only an extra $30-ish compared to other sets, wouldn't get the pre-wired because I always wire my strats like a weirdo.

Have a strat with 3 Hot Rails, 1 vol and 1 tone, both 250k pots instead of 500k and a super weird capacitor value.

Weird but I dig it!

Sorry I'm a bit late to this Pick-up party! I'd just like to add a couple pof other suggestions:-
Lindy Fralin I highly recommend their products!!
Bareknuckle Mothers Milk or perhaps Bareknuckle Irish Tour. Again, highly recommended by me. I've installed several of these sets for people and have never been let down by them.

I have tried the Fender Malmsteen guitar, equipped with the Seymour Duncan YJM pickups. I think they're great pickups. Definitely sounds like a Strat, with no hum. If anything, its a bit of an exaggerated Strat sound, but I really dig it. In fact, I think I prefer it over real single coils.

But there is one Hum-cancelling pickup that I rarely see mentioned (probably because the inventor/owner isn't very good at marketing unfortunately), but probably has the most accurate sound to my ears. It's made by a little company called Zexcoil. I've never played them, but in the demos they sound amazing. They're a very interesting design - there is one coil for each individual string.

Another interesting design that has just been released is the Fishman Fluence pickups.
