GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Worst Gig Ever! Wow I Am Furious!

Posted by: Marc_Maiden Oct 29 2009, 06:54 AM

I dont mean to sound arrogant, but i almost NEVER mess up during gigs...these songs we play over and over and pretty much jazz standards (and some rock songs to spice it up)

tonight we had a gig at a pizza place....the owner was just rude...apparently we were being to loud even though people said we were at a low enough volume to be perfect...

as you can see from the video...the owner distracts us and messes us up after my solo while he tries to get us to stop..

my teacher then has to call an emergency ending on the fly...

wow i am so mad.....

Yeah, they can be really something... I experienced some of them even pulling the plug out of the wall....
And they have a strange approach to music. When they have no people in the club - they wants some music in order to get people, but have no money to pay with. When they HAVE some customers - they also wants music, but can't pay fair anyway, cause they are telling: "If I pay You, my profit goes down the drain". They just fooling us around, and I have NEVER met a bar/club owner that knows anything about music, and I have been playing 100's of joints.... biggrin.gif

We all had these experiences. Don't worry wink.gif

Then why do they want you to play there in the first place?

Posted by: Sensible Jones Oct 29 2009, 11:40 AM

At least you got to finish the song!! Sorta!!!! tongue.gif

I've played in Bars over here where they have a Db meter on the wall. If it goes over a preset level it kills the power to the stage!!! I have seen these meters kill the power just on the noise from the audience talking!!!!

Spain...sweet
I play that song too.
A friend told me that, when playing with his band at a private event, the organizer asked them to stop the drums... biggrin.gif

Let me get this straight. He wanted music at his place but at the same time it was too much noise for him? Am I the only one who thinks that doesn't make sense at all? He shouldn't have booked it then.

Just punch him in the face next time, rock n roll!

Man this is terrible. I don't get why you are coming of the stage in the end. Did they kick you out or it was end of your set list or what?

Oh well, THAT meters.... Why does it sound so familiar ??? biggrin.gif
Btw. I was playing a lot on crusie ships in the old day's, and at one ship the bar-manager had a thorn in the side to us, so he asked constantly asked us to turn down the volume - but in the pauses he was playing hardrock with his own equipment VERY loud. He also had a problem espially with our drummer, since the rest of us played on the monitors... The drummer went from sticks to brushes, and the finally he was playing with just his hands. And that ol' stupid still complained (actually he drank a lot from the bar himself as well), which led to that our drummer was breaking the set and started to pack his drums. Later that evening, (when the drummer also had a drink) he beat the guy up and we never played on that ship again.... laugh.gif

Anyway, to be a professional musician takes a lot of patience in more than one way, so just feel sorry for him instead Marc.... He doesn't know better...

Thaaat's the problem! They weren't playing either kind of music: neither country nor western.

This will be a valuable experience for you in the future. You will come across such situations with club managers/owners that have "special requests" that are not logical. You should try to do your best on the gig and then after the gig is over have a word with him.

It happens, you'll get used to that, don't worry. smile.gif
