Gabriel, how you doing man... i really like the way you play, and was very surprised about how you played Y.Malmsteen lesson... i wanna play like that..!
so i wanted to ask for your advise..
i just quit my job and saved enough money so i can just focus on practicing all day long for 1 full year... maybe more if i just eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... but i would like to know from your view, what's the best way to use my time and what to practice daily so in a year i can see tremendous results..
i am kinda beginner, but not too beginner...
I want to be able to improvise really well and eventually be able to also know the fretboard so well that any idea that i got in my mind i can play it and use that to create more interesting music...
what do you suggest..?
if you were in my shoes and you were kinda beginner, how would you use this time to get to where you are now..?
Thanks a lot man,
''Jhonny La Chingas..''
I'm also in a similar situation, except it's only 2months for vaction, but I wanna know a really good routine to help with improvising, and technical development.
Well.. that are good news!! 15 hours per day routine woulb be excelent!
You should divide the time in technique, theory and improvisation + fun.
About technique I suggest you to compile lots of lessons from different books, clinics and GMC and separate it in this parts to pracitce every day:
Technique:
Legato exercises
Alternate Picking
Sweep Picking
Bending and Vibrato
Rhythm Stuff
Tapping
Theory:
You should learn Harmony (from any book or it a teacher). This will help you to improve your composition and improvisation.
Learn new scales and new chords positions every day.
Improvisation:
Prepair many different backing tracks to Jam over it.
and finally learn complete songs or many licks of guitar players like Hendrix, Saraceno, SRV, Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai.
All this things are very importan so in the begining you should take the same time for every part.
Good luck!!
Gabriel.-
pd: I want to hear something recorded by you now and something from the next year.
Just a suggestion, but maybe spend one day (or more) a week on an acoustic if possible.
[edit] Oh! and record yourself AT LEAST once a week. You have to be able to hear yourself recorded so you can say, ack, thats terrible. I really need to improve on ____. And you can post it here and we can help you more
Gabriel... Thanks so much for your detailed advice man..
(i didn´t have access to internet for a week so i couldn´t respond)
I will definitely start doing that... i´ll divide my time into those areas you say...
I´m actually not too behind on theory and harmony... in fact i think i´ve learned more of theory and harmony than what i am actually capable of playing with the guitar... so you can imagine it is frustrating..
but in these last 3 weeks i´ve been focusing on practicing about 4 of the videos from GMC and focusing on improving those things and skills... and i´ve seen some nice improvement... feels good..
so´ i´m printing this mail and i´m gonna start with my new schedule then...
thank you Gabriel... i´ll keep you posted from time to time on my progress if that´s ok...
Gracias Amigo,
Jhonny La Chingas..!
Hey thanks JVM.... that´s really good advice also...
i´ll record my self attempting to improvise.... i´ll be able to tell then all the areas i need to improve..
Thank you..!
This is a very interesting thread - and I definately agree with Gabriel!
I also want to add: be sure not to practice only technique exercises for 15 hours in a row - because you will most likely hurt your hands badly (not all people recover from this).
Another aspect is that the few periods where I have had the chance to practice that much - I have faced a new problem: lack of motivation. Some people have problems being motivated to practice 5 hours/day - now practcing 15 hours a day can be a challenge.
Now if you do manage to keep this routine without hurting yourself - then you will come back as a king! I am looking forward to that!
If someone attempts this kind of schedule, and is interested in blogging about it - get in contact with me!
Kris
PS Congratulations Gabriel for inspiring people to this kind of practice schedule!
