I have a fender strat with a vintage trem. I realized the other day that I have never changed the strings on it myself and I want to learn how. There is no locking nut or anything. Do I follow the same steps for a Floyd Rose setup and just ignore the parts about the locking nut?

I would say it's more similar to a normal bridge type guitar. Just pass through the string from the back and tune up. U might have to tune all strings more than one time as the bridge isn't fixed.

This is if your tremolo is already set-up.

Depends how you like it set up. You can raise the bridge off the guitar body or have the bridge touching the body while at rest (meaning lots of screw tension).

More screw tension will be better for keeping the guitar in tune, and also give you more sustain from your notes. This setup is what I would recommend, unless you want to use the whammy bar to increase string pitch as well. And be aware of that size strings are on the guitar now, larger strings will increase the tension, and may cause the bridge to lift. On my strats I always used 9's (meaning 0.09" diameter of the high e string). Some like 10's, more tone, but harder to play.

Remember, if you change the way the bridge sits, you will have to change the action individually on the strings also for best performance.

Fender has exact descriptions on how their tremolos should be set up. Somewhere on their homepage, I remember reading the trem should be raised over the body just a fraction, don't recall if it was a full mm even.
Try looking there aswell as Ivans instruction video.
