Hey guys i've pretty much whittled my next amp choices down too two. I'm looking at the Orange Rocker 30 Head/Combo and the Orange AD30HTC Head w/Orange 2x12. MickeM i was hoping you could help here because you said that one of your favorite amp companys was Orange so go you haha thx. the only Orange i've tried is the Tiny Terror which was great. So the reason I'm thinking orange is because they are constructed amazing and are used by my FAVORITE band ever The Fall Of Troy, (who are starting to get some recognition btw) smile.gif anyway their guitarist uses an Orange AD140 which i believe is the same as an AD30 but has more power but their discontinued, and therforough WAY expensive i think. Also their guitarist said he prefers using mid-gain amps even on his heavier stuff which i also like too do.
So yeah.....I'm probably going get the Rocker 30 but I don't know. I think I'd rather have the AD30.

Opinons?

thx a ton

Interesting coises smile.gif Both british and vintage.

If you would first concider a couple of things you possibly could NOT like about these amps it's the lack of an fx loop and a reverb. So all pedals go infront and if you need reverb you have to have a pedal for that, rever or delay works too.

The rocker 30 breaths simplicity, no fx loop no reverb and the clean channel only has a volume knob. No EQ. So it's really up to the player to make that channel sound good.
The AD30 has the same setup of EQ + volume and gain on both channels and they are not the ordinary clean vs distortion channels but both are the same except for basic tonal differences. Both channels go from clean to dirty and where of one has a bit more gain.

If I should recommend one of these it's the AD30, no doubt. The clean on the rocker 30 it with it's lack of an EQ is limited to crave a great player and a great guitar. While the AD also has a rectifier tube for that extra compressed tube sound. I'd even confess that if I stood there with the choise I'd be in doubt... maybe I'd pick the AD30 now that I think about it laugh.gif

But if you ever concider you need an fx loop and reverb you should glance over to the Thunderverb or Rockerverb 50 watt amps. If I were to choose between the two of them I think I'd pick the Thunderverb. It's more vintage and has a built in attenuator. These cost more though.

I see you liked the Tiny Terror, I must be the only one who doesn't like the sound of it. I thought it completely lacked botton and was all pinchy and gritty. But everybody else seem to just love it so I suspect something was either bad with the one I tried, or the cab.

I do love the idea of a rockerverb 50 head and orange 412 stack but i just dont have that kind of money unfortunately sad.gif
My plan is to buy one of these two and then two sell them in a year....maybe 2 for a rockerverb. But yes i would miss the reverb. But there's about an 800 difference in price for these amps. Is the clean good on the Rocker 30?

Is the clean good on the Rocker 30?

It's clean all the way up. Surprisingly clean for EL34's. You know, I used to have a Marshall JCM800 which had a lousy clean channel regarding chimey and full tone and it was rather undefined and indestinct. What was great with that was that you could hide any mistakes while playing, not talking about striking the complete wrong note but playing with unsensitive fingers wasn't noticed since it got eaten by the unclear defenition. Make mistakes, like hitting a note a little bit too hard compared to the others and you'll have all spotlights and the complete audience staring at you.
And that's part of the charm with this amp. No fx loop, no reverb, a difficult to tame clean. It's rock n roll, a bad ace (I'm a moderator so keeping it clean lol) amp simple as that.

The gap between the two in price isn't much. Like you say there's a different pricing of the Thunderverb and the Rockerverb. I never tried the Thunderverb 50 btw, only the 200W and that was just ridicilous and I didn't know it had a built in attenuator so I wasn't too pleased really. Never mind.

If you can try them side by side I think that would do it for you. Especially the cleans if that's your main deal here. Crank the rocker 30 clean channel and dial the Ad30 in to right about poweramp distortion and compare them.
And to be frank I don't think there's a need to sell in a couple years to get a Rockerverb, if you get the right one for you between the two I suspect you can be happy for a looooooong time :-)

youve given some awesome insight so thank you very much! I think that now i'll take your advice and side by side the two amps, the rocker and the AD. Thank you and goodnight haha
