Hi guys! Watching new, awesome Stephane fusion licks lesson and reading some of Matt's articles I had an idea to ask a question to some more expirienced jazz/fusion player. I think many of guitarists that are new to the world of modal scales and chord progressions different than regular minor/major wonder about the same thing.

World of harmony is huge and it's very tough to make any choice of songs to learn for people who are pretty fresh to it. Aside from all harmony master pieces I found most popular songs...at least those often played at jam sessions, have much in common. Even though jazz seems to be the highest level (in the meaning of guitar knowlege) it still have some rules and some patterns that are often repeated. For example many of the songs based on the 2 5 1 sequence etc...

So I think best way to start would be to get known to at least 5 songs that uses most popular jazz chord progressions.

After learning how to improvise over those songs we'll be able to catch those progressions in other songs and use this knowlege for pfurther developement.

Name 5 songs that have most popular and most often used jazz chord progressions.

Yeah that tune is great for working on ii V I's in major and minor keys over the same song, always use this tune when introducing people to jazz improvisation.

This is a more extensive list that I put together over several years.
There are of course alternate tunes one could pick and of course some 'jazzers' will disagree on some of my choices. I picked these because out here they also get called a lot on gigs and at jazz/fusion jams. I also feel that if you know these 40 songs, nothing you come across chord progression wise will surprise you - in any style of music.

Honestly, I feel that the 'minimum' is the first 30.
Five is just too limiting in my opinion.

I get Your point Ken but more then five is too much for a beginner in this field. Especially that some of the rules from those 5 are usefull with other 25 so even though I understand how this works, I also know that little pieces are easy to get know with before going further smile.gif

OK, then to start with a beginner - basically Matt's list.
So 'major' blues, minor blues, Rhythm changes, modal (impressions/so what or if you're really motivated then Maiden Voyage) and Take The A-train.

But you cannot stop there.

* the next set should start with What is This Thing Called Love - contains both major and minor ii-Vs ... really important.
