This is a more extensive list that I put together over several years.
There are of course alternate tunes one could pick and of course some 'jazzers' will disagree on some of my choices. I picked these because out here they also get called a lot on gigs and at jazz/fusion jams. I also feel that if you know these 40 songs, nothing you come across chord progression wise will surprise you - in any style of music.

OK, then to start with a beginner - basically Matt's list.
So 'major' blues, minor blues, Rhythm changes, modal (impressions/so what or if you're really motivated then Maiden Voyage) and Take The A-train.
