String Pushes Back Too Much

Hi GMC:
I'm new here and one of the reasons I signed up was to get some guidance in building a practice routine. I'm working through Kris' alt-picking videos by doing 16th's at 60bpm (had to start at 50bpm today, actually) and trying to go up. I notice I really feel the string pushing back sometimes when I go to pick it on the downstroke. I'm trying to pick so it is loud and clear, is that going to slow me down substantially?

It is hard to say why you feel the strings are pushing back too much, but just guessing I would say you are either picking too deep on the downstroke or you need to try some thinner picks. Also I would not worry too much about your AP speed yet if you are just starting out. It is a good thing to work on but don't use it as a reference for how much you may or may not be improving. It will drive you crazy.

Had a guitar hanging, just about waist high, and we are going to play these things until the day we die.

Thanks for the reply. I have been playing for a little more than two years now and am starting to learn how to practice, so that is why I've started clocking AP speed.

As you start to progress up the tempo, it is good to keep the movements minimal, and only to touch the strings enough for the to ring. Digging in is useful but when playing fast it can cause pick stops. Here are couple of tips:

- try to make every picking movement even and light, start with light movements at slow tempos and continue when you speed up the exercise. This will lead to more gentler and precise movements hopefully.
- angle your pick so that you get even sounds from every picking motion, experiment during practice and see what angle works best.
- try to find a thinner pick (but still stiff) pick, and experiment with different picks until you find the one that suits you the best
