Barre Chords, which is the right way?

I don't have a guitar with me so I'm using the wrist pad in front of my keyboard to test it out....it all depends on what chord you're trying to grip, sometimes you don't really have a choice, but ideally you want to use the flat part. Using the side pulls the rest of your fingers farther away from the fretboard, making the rest of the chord harder to grip. There's some awkward chords out there that require you to tweak your barre a little bit, though. Watch all of the lesson videos with people playing barre chords and you'll get the idea. WEll there is a lesson in here the first one in beginners that is talking about barre chords and the way it is done is confusing... so what i'm doing is laying my finger flat across the fret board and a little bit off the fret board is that the wrong way?
