I am comparing my beloved Guitar Rig 4 and my new Th2 Guitar Plugins so I took the "Auto Wah" lead patch from both and applied it to a bit of lead I recorded. Here are both. Let me know what you think?

Hey... This would be a cool competition! If you post the recording of a clean recording of the guitar (maby one rhythm and one lead), and see who can make the best sound for it using any plugin available! Set a deadline and have a poll and let the madness begin:)

Should be interesting enough

Good comparison, but I can notice that GR4 preset has less midrange, less presence, and mono reverb, while TH2 has stereo reverb with greater diffusion, which is more pronounced as well.

The overloud had abetter sounding wah, while the rig had a better tone( I thought ) which is probably just some E.Q. ing and different modeling

The GR4 I kinda of like better in some aspects, but the TH is more pronounced and had more stereo sound in my speakers. The TH had too much reverb for me, but I think it wins out.

That about covers it smile.gif All those things are sort of what makes the TH2 sound quite a bit better. But really I just wanted to throw out a couple of similar patches for overall "tone" judgement. That's what the post is about.

Going to have to be the sole voice of disagreement. The GR4 sounds more natural and organic. Yes, it has less "in-your-face" aspect than the TH2 but that can easily be fixed with a bit of EQ and a decent reverb.

The TH2 clip has horrible digital-sounding transients. I want to like it but I can't. It sounds like a cheap multi-FX.

I can't get into Overloud at all. For me It always sounds like there is transient clipping. The tones are naturally brighter but I find anything mixed with GR sits much better in a mix, and they lend themselves better to post editing. With the demo I had to adjust TH2 quite a bit from one patch the next, a bit inconsistent, and when I mastered it I always had to go back in the mix and lower the volume to an uncomfortable point because it was so pronounced in so many frequency ranges. I think I had a lowpass on TH2 starting at like 14K! as opposed to GR where it sits at about 18-20k usually.

Just my experiences though.

Yup! You nailed it on the low end and presence with TH2 in a mix. The reason this usually happens is the

RESPIRE

button on the cabinet controls. If left on, the patch sounds huge by itself, but hogs up way to much audio spectrum and will not sit in a mix. Where as the GR4 patch, sits just fine in a mix. So the OVERLOUD stuff can be very handy for just a practice setup even with RESPIRE left on. If you plan on mixing with it, you can use the same patch, but you MUST turn off RESPIRE during mixdown or it just doesn't work well.

I've been using OVERLOUD off and on for live video chat lessons and sharing presets with students. The rather extreme EQ settings on TH1 and TH2 make it bring out pick strikes quite nicely which is very handy when showing a picking workout. I've started using Guitar Rig 5 recently and it has some amazing tools. It's definately more flexible in terms of tone choice.
