If You Were To Play Another Style Of Music

We might describe ourselves as a rock guitar player, metal, blues, jazz etc.. However, if you were to play another style of music other than your 'main style' what would it be and why ? I could see myself really getting into ambient, textured landscape type music.. with minimal percussion and ethereal atmosphere As for the reason why - well, I think this type of stuff just flows very naturally and you only have to pick up your guitar, pluck a few chordal arpeggios and you've got something to play with straight away. I remember seeing this old film called Southern Comfort with music by Ry Cooder and it was so atmospheric. It made me grab a slide, turn all the bass up on my amp and the treble waaaay down and get some boomy atmospheric stuff goin' ! If I could find people with the same vision (it's pretty difficult!), I would play more along the lines of a mix between James Horner and Opeth (Lamenations - Blackwater Park) style. I got a degree in music back in 2000 with major in classical guitar, so I'm not new to classical guitar but my interest in flamenco is something that has developed in recent years. paco pena's music has been really inspirational for me, the song I'm posting here is a peace I've been learning for a few months. I've had many jams of folk songs and it feels absolutely great. It's never been at the same kind of level as the real folk musicians.. much more simplified.. but still, incredible fun ! Unfortunately, I am, as they might say, 'standard notation-dyslexic.' [I know what most of the symbols mean so I can parse the notation -- but every time I look at a staff, I'm basically counting note posistions.] Not to mention that I have serious procedural memory issues regarding remembering sequences of pretty much anything, notes, words... So, for years I've been trying to improve my finger skills as well as learn the functional mechanics of the classical approach in order to be able to improvise in something approaching a classical style. It's been an interesting journey. PS... funny folks mentioned wanting to play blues... I'm pretty OK at faking some delta bottleneck, I think. When I first pick up the slide after a while, it all feels so cool and I'm instantly impressed that I can makes something that sounds vaguely like I know what I'm doing... but after playing for 5 or 10 minutes I'm always thinking, man, it's always the same damn song. LOL. I seem to stumbled into a set of fellow travelers. I've been doing a lot of DADGAD picking the last few years. Not necessarily all in a Celtic style, but it does lend that quality at times. I've been a huge fan of Renbourn, Jansch, and Thompson for years and have lately gone back and filled in my early 60s gaps with Davy Graham, Martin Carthy, as well as expanding out to listen to Martin Simpson's non-Celtic explorations, as well as those of Pierre Bensusan.
