I would say that most of us here have a particular style or genre that we spend most of our time playing in. We might describe ourselves as a rock guitar player, metal, blues, jazz etc..

However, if you were to play another style of music other than your 'main style' what would it be and why ?

I could see myself really getting into ambient, textured landscape type music.. with minimal percussion and ethereal atmosphere smile.gif As for the reason why - well, I think this type of stuff just flows very naturally and you only have to pick up your guitar, pluck a few chordal arpeggios and you've got something to play with straight away.

I remember seeing this old film called Southern Comfort with music by Ry Cooder and it was so atmospheric. It made me grab a slide, turn all the bass up on my amp and the treble waaaay down and get some boomy atmospheric stuff goin' ! That was years ago but it got me more interested in conjuring up atmospheres.

I consider myself a rock/metal guitar player, I would like to play any sub style that is included in these genres as well as punk, blues and pop. Post Rock and ambient are also styles that I would like to play. Besides all this, I would also like to play Cello in an Orchestra. smile.gif

I've been playing mainstream rock/pop for the past 2 years - and not exactly by choice - it's just easier to play venues that way. If I could find people with the same vision (it's pretty difficult!), I would play more along the lines of a mix between James Horner and Opeth (Lamenations - Blackwater Park) style.

In my case it would be flamenco and rumba music. I love the intensity and expression of flamenco guitar. I got a degree in music back in 2000 with major in classical guitar, so I'm not new to classical guitar but my interest in flamenco is something that has developed in recent years. paco pena's music has been really inspirational for me, the song I'm posting here is a peace I've been learning for a few months. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Yeah, I imagine that might be a bit too challenging foe the average listener down the local watering hole !! smile.gif

I'm not really familiar with African music at all.. but I've heard that their percussive patterns are almost impossible to an outsider, even accomplished drummers !

I'd like to think it would be Classical smile.gif But it would probably be Bluegrass with some Classical bits in it. I was born in kentucky and raised in Georgia so the Folk Music gene runs pretty strong smile.gif

One thing I have to say about folk music, no matter the country of origin.. it all looks incredibly exhilarating to be part of it.. especially if you were the lead instrument.

I've had many jams of folk songs and it feels absolutely great. It's never been at the same kind of level as the real folk musicians.. much more simplified.. but still, incredible fun ! smile.gif

I think I would gravitate towards blues. Not the pretend blues that I occasionally manage to pull out but proper 'ralph macchio' delta stuff.
stuff like ry cooders 'feelin bad blues' just blows me away.

I started out as a dumb folkie turned punk rocker but I've always wanted to be able to play classical.

Unfortunately, I am, as they might say, 'standard notation-dyslexic.' [I know what most of the symbols mean so I can parse the notation -- but every time I look at a staff, I'm basically counting note posistions.] Not to mention that I have serious procedural memory issues regarding remembering sequences of pretty much anything, notes, words...

So, for years I've been trying to improve my finger skills as well as learn the functional mechanics of the classical approach in order to be able to improvise in something approaching a classical style.

It's been an interesting journey. wink.gif

PS... funny folks mentioned wanting to play blues... I'm pretty OK at faking some delta bottleneck, I think. When I first pick up the slide after a while, it all feels so cool and I'm instantly impressed that I can makes something that sounds vaguely like I know what I'm doing... but after playing for 5 or 10 minutes I'm always thinking, man, it's always the same damn song. (The Ry Cooder Soundtrack Syndrome, if you will. biggrin.gif )

I tend to play Blues mostly, but I could see myself playing Celtic style music, since I love listening to it. also, I would love to be able to play the Violin or cello.

LOL. I seem to stumbled into a set of fellow travelers.

I've been doing a lot of DADGAD picking the last few years. Not necessarily all in a Celtic style, but it does lend that quality at times. I've been a huge fan of Renbourn, Jansch, and Thompson for years and have lately gone back and filled in my early 60s gaps with Davy Graham, Martin Carthy, as well as expanding out to listen to Martin Simpson's non-Celtic explorations, as well as those of Pierre Bensusan.

Some of it can be for sure!! I've seen bands where there'll be 4 guitarists and they'll each be playing in different time signatures, like one in 4/4, one in 3/4, one in 6/8 and the other in 2/4 or something and it all becomes very 'cyclic'. It starts off great then starts to sound a bit disjointed and then it comes back again. It's great seeing it live and trying to pick out which player is playing which part!!
Some more straight up stuff would be like this:-

Fun clip!

I love a lot of African music. I saw Fela, Sunny Ade, Manu Dibango, Papa Wembe and some others. And I spent a couple hours this morning listening to Ali Farka Toure -- which is always exotic fun.
