Hmm.. Ive tried it a few times without the pick and just my fingers but it will definitely take some getting used to

You can also solo with fingers. This give so much control and possibilites of tone variation. Check out how much I varied the tone intensity in this collaboration. Or you can change between fingers and pick which offers an even bigger field of variation. Example: a song by me.

Hold it more firmly! During the time you control will improve so you will have no problem playing strumming, also, practice sweeping.
