I can only say how I do it.
First I listen to a song until I know it. Then I play along to the CD, or mp3 rather since I run it slowed down for difficult parts.
Important is to LISTEN and play the same. I use tabs aswell but only when I know how it's supposed to sound. You can use tabs and get it all wrong.
At first I will have it down sloppy but as soon as I got the foundation right I will add additional stuff.
Listen
Play along with the song
Add the advanced things after
Hello, I understand your problem. I have the same problem as well. ^^ I hear a cool song I really want to learn but the same minute I start practicing it I find an even cooler song. ^^ My advice is for you to start learning easy songs (very easy) lets say a song with only power chords. And when u master it u learn another easy song. The reason is; it's easy to get bored if u doesn't have any songs u can jam along to. And when you are bored with the easy stuff you start playing the more advanced stuff. ^^
Listen to the song as much as possible break it down into as many parts as you can, Riff by Riff Lick After Lick just break it down into small part, and then learn each individual parts, listen closely and visualize where and how its being played on the fretboard.
Yeah I just listen and try to find a reliable tab. Of course I do not have guitar pro but I do have power tab so I just use that when trying to learn a song
