My first guitar was set up for and string with 9's. It pretty much set the pattern for me to always buy 9's (Ernie Ball) when I do string changes.
My second guitar was the Ibanez RS-440 that I got on eBay. When it arrived, the strings were all rusted out so it needed a change right away and I naturally used my Ernie Ball 9's and have always been using them since.
The problem that I had was that the low E string buzzed a lot. I always assumed that I was doing something wrong. I also had a nasty habit of pushing that string up off the neck for some reason. The neck didn't look like it needed a truss rod adjustment of anything like that. Some of the frets were worn and I was wondering if that was the problem.
This week I thought I'd try 10's and it worked. The RS-440 plays a lot better now. I guess my problem the whole time was string tension. The low E was relatively loose and that's where the buzz was coming from. Bumping the gauge up brought up the string tension enough to keep it from buzzing.
Maybe someone else struggling with their guitar will read this and figure it out faster than I did.
