So...

this site, though wonderful and comprehensive in what it does offer, doesn't touch on many great genres of music (to name a few: Ambient, Indie, Funk, pop-punk).

Now, granted I may be pretty ignorant of the ways of the guitar in comparison to the majority of you, but I think that lessons in these genres could teach a lot. Ambient music in the style of Explosions in the Sky would be a great way to teach music theory and scales/modes to beginners or advanced guitarists. An indie lesson would be great for barre chords, triads, picking technique, etc. Pop-punk would be a perfect genre for beginner lessons on power chords and simple riffs (in the style of Sum 41 or Blink 182 etc.)

Funk is just fun. smile.gif

That's not even mentioning the many other genres that are not really addressed on this site. Now, I'm not saying that metal and neoclassical are bad, they just kinda dominate the site (though I will also admit that they are very good for teaching technique).

any thoughts?

I totally agree. In all honesty, The all metal, all the time thing is getting old fast. We need some classic rock, classical and jazz stuff.
"Funk is just fun."
Yes. Yes it is. smile.gif
Theres my 2 cents.

I agree. Some more jazz would be awesome aswell. I think GMC got one or two jazz lessons, wich is great. I remember GMC only having one single Blues lesson not that long ago, but now theres tons! smile.gif
I think theres something to learn from every genre, I definatly agree with you.

Some more funky bass lessons would have been great aswell! smile.gif

Oh, and, this have been brought up before, more chord lessons would have been really good. I think thats the "only" thing GMC miss at the moment.

Hi Pantalaimon

I think that issue is being addressed at the moment at the GMC. I myself have contributed a Country, Bluegrass, Pink Floyd/Blues and U2 lesson and am trying to diversify on styles with a few different ones coming up.

Recently GMC has brought aboard some great instructors in new genres such as for example Ben on the Jazz.

I think if you give it a little more time you will see those lessons you spoke of. Personally I do intend to tackle some of the ones you mentioned. I like the different styles myself and I think you have a good point - it's happening though at the GMC as we speak in my opinion smile.gif. There are a VAST amount of styles out there and I'm sure many will be added as we go along.

p.s. Oh and you hit the nail on the head there about "metal and neoclassical/though I will also admit that they are very good for teaching technique". That's very true. And bear in mind that you can improve on taking some of the techniques demonstrated and applying them to other styles. That takes time but it is something well worth exploring for a player.

Yes I have seen your lessons and Ben's (which I think are very good by the way), and I'm having a lot of fun exploring the lessons and learning new techniques. The real point behind my original suggestion was this: though the styles used in many of the currently available lessons are very good for teaching techniques, it is sometimes a bit discouraging for a novice guitarist to learn all those new techniques if they are only taught using a style that he/she has little interest in. For example, I like music that is more poppy in nature than most of the music here, and if I were to write music of my own (which I plan on doing someday), it probably would sound little like the music here. It would just be a lot easier to apply the techniques taught here to personal songwriting; it would also be easier to get motivated to actually sit down and learn new techniques if they pertained to a more interesting style of music.

I know I kinda sound like a broken record at this point but that was more of the point I was trying to make originally.

The main reason I was hooked on this site from the time I saw it was because it did focus on the genre that I love and I don't see many sites out there that give lessons in it. However, when I become proficient enough in the style I love, I would love to learn others.

Lesson styles are up to instructors! We can't have FUNK lesson if we don't have instructors who can REALLY show you funk (took funk just for example). So i guess the styles variety will come with more instructors and GMC growing. So just be patient and i am sure you'll find lots of stuff pretty soon! smile.gif

I feel even metal isnt broadly covered. All we seem to be getting offered is progressive/neoclassical/speed and a bit of thrash. What happened to death and doom type stuff, that to me is the more emotionally charged stylings of metal.

I guess no instructors around like that music! So you can't expect a lesson on something we don't play! smile.gif

Pavel has made a very good point here. The compositions of the lessons depends very much on the available instructors and also on the demands of the majority of the students. This naturally leads to fairly "metal-orientated" material. I personally don't listen to modern metal, but I appreciate the content of those lessons and enjoy applying the techniques to my own musical style. Having said that, it is good to see a bit of diversity provided by David, Ben and some of the other instructors.

Hopefully by flagging that there is a demand for covering other musical styles, some other instructors will take up the challenge of providing suitable lessons.

When you're mentioning other types of metal, I'd love to do a black metal lesson. If anyone is interested I could give it a try.

I'm interested in learning to play jazz, I think it'll help strengthen my improvisational skills, but it's hard to know where to start with it. A jazz lesson for idiots would definantly help.

With all do respect there is TONS of things Gmc needs. But until we have the proper instructers that suit the part of those " THINGS" we wont have them . So patience is are best tool as of now. And im sure Ben Howell has some more jazz planned , so theres allready stuff on its way. smile.gif
