It goes like this - find out what chord this is (the one in the attachment)
The first one who finds out, has to record another chord (he chooses what) and post it here for the other guys to figure out and so on - the main rule is - the one who guesses the chord needs to start the new challenge
It's not necessary to use any fancy recording devices - you only need to record 1 chord !
Ready??
GO!!

I know the chord!
A#m7b5?
I'm not sure if that is the right chords name, I had to look at a chart to see which chord it was but the chord I just stated matched the sound...

That's perfect Artyom - but now, try and see what the relationship between the intervals are - considering E as the root and figure out the name of the chord. Mr. Rich was a sly fox
It's that nicknamed chord with a little extra something
Mad was very close
Posted by: mad Jan 24 2013, 02:23 PM
Well, these are exactly the same notes I got and used a chord-finder tool for to get a name
Posted by: Sensible Jones Jan 24 2013, 04:13 PM
It a Jimi Hendixadd13!
Or I think the correct name would be EM7#9add13.

Ok, we have E as a root, then
G# - major third
D - minor 7th
G - looks like augmented 9th
C - looks like minor 13th
Also there is no 5th.
Now I'm totally confused about right name of this chord...

Well, Neil has said the name before you did
major 3rd and b7th usually signal a dominant 7th chord and this one is E7#9add13 so Neil you missed it BY AN INCH
no M7 here - I just noticed you said M7
So I say - why not Artyom AND Neil throw a chord at us, each!

I just noticed that too, now you mention it! I did mean to write m7 so as to distinguish it but must have made a typo!
Sorry!!

As far as I can tell the chord had been found but the name for this chord has not been guessed yet, unless I missed something.
The chord as I understand it is.
E7#9 b13

True - as it's a flat 13th we have there - sorry for having my head in the clouds

The old Hendrix chord (E7#9) with a b13 (#5) built from E alt, 7th mode of FMM...

Alright guys! Who's the first to tackle smolentsev's challenge?
Posted by: brwnhornet59 Jan 25 2013, 12:16 PM
It is a B 6/9 (sans 5th) with the 6th doubled in octaves.... B G# D# G# C# (R 6th 3rd 6th 9th)...

Indeed, but from the instructions I saw, the chord name was based off of the root. We can add all of the inversions as part of the answer if you want.
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 26 2013, 11:16 AM
Yes, indeed guys, let's stick to the chord name based on the root, in order to avoid diversions for this one, BUT, since you came up with it, maybe I'll start a little activity based on this idea as well So, Sensible Jones - you have the ball!
Posted by: brwnhornet59 Jan 26 2013, 05:13 PM
LOL, but no one named the chord I posted as of yet...
Posted by: Sensible Jones Jan 26 2013, 06:37 PM
Sounds like a Diminished 7 to me.
F#, C, Eb, A.
As we know these can be repeated shapes so it could be F#dim7, Cdim7, Ebdim7 or Adim7.

No sir, try again...
To be fair I was 1/4-1/2 of a semitone flat of standard tuning when I recorded that. I did not realize it until afterwards...That will learn me to be in tune LOL...
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 27 2013, 08:26 AM
Hehe, check the tuning folks, otherwise it will confuse everyone So, what is this one then?
Posted by: brwnhornet59 Jan 27 2013, 03:20 PM
The slight offset tuning should not have stopped anyone from getting the sequence, Sensible Jones had two notes right. The notes are Eb A Db G...
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 27 2013, 04:59 PM
I'm not telling
Posted by: Sensible Jones Jan 27 2013, 06:01 PM
Well, with that spelling it's Eb7b5, didn't sound like that to my ear though!

Yes, Eb7b5 from Eb H/W dim...
or
Eb7#11 built from lydian dom (4th mode of BbMM)...
Or
Eb7#11 from Eb wholetone...
Take your pick...

Hey guys! Got a new one for ya! What could this one be?
Posted by: brwnhornet59 Feb 2 2013, 02:57 PM
The notes are E, A#, C#, G#...
In this context it is a drop 2 E6 #4...
R, #4, 6, 3rd...
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 3 2013, 04:00 PM

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 12 2013, 12:59 PM
C'mon don't be shy or is it troublesome?
Posted by: Sensible Jones Feb 12 2013, 05:02 PM
I'm hearing A,D#,A,C#,A#.
If we're using A as the Root then I think this would give us an A-9b5. (R, dim2,3,dim 5)
If not I think my ears might need re-setting!!

It is indeed an A root, but it is not a minor chord unless you meant a b9 ("A-" to me is A minor) But because I see you wrote C# in there I think it is just a matter of how we read symbols differently...You got three of the 5 notes (A C# Bb) correct. The A is not doubled either...

Yeah that '-' is for the b9, not the A.
I'll go give it another listen!!

This would be an A augmented b9 (1 3 #5 b9)
And I am throwing a new one into the mix:

Yes the notes are, A G C# F Bb or A7b9#5 (b13)....
