GMC Forum _ Wiki Writers _ Announcement : Wiki Writers Bonus Grading

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn May 19 2008, 01:36 PM

As some of you may know if you have been following the Wiki competition - a couple of authors have written articles that are clearly better than articles already getting the maximum score. This is behavior we want to encourage!

To try and keep things reasonably fair, we will continue to use the same 1 - 5 grading on all entries, but the perception has shifteed a little. The rules stay the same, but in my mind a 5 is the standard that everyone should be aiming for, less than that will still qualify but for me, 5 represents an article that I am happy to have inthe Wiki, less than that is a work in progress that we should try and improve (outside of the competition of course).

So how to reward those who are meeting and exceeding this level? We will do the following:

All current articles will be re-read, and those of a standard higher than 5 will be regraded as "5+". For now that is the only change, and the score board will remain the same. However, at the end of the competition, all 5+ articles will be awarded an additional unlimited bonus score. This gives us room to recognise extraordinary entries when judged against the rest of the entries.

What does this mean in practice? Well as we originally intended, this isn't just a numbers game now - if you want to write 3 or 4 outstanding entries, with this scoring you could easily win. You could even win with one immense article that is full of depth and information. But, be warned! It isn;t just about lenght, it is also about quality of the information!

As an example, http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Pearl_Jam (the first of our 5+ articles) would qualify for probably an extra 3 - 5 points although the final levels will be set by taking into account the overall quality of all entries.

I hope everyone agrees that this is fair, and please note that I will not enter into discussions of the gradings of individual articles!

Regards,

Andrew

Sounds fair to me

I hope this encourages people to write some top quality articles that would not be out of a place in an official magazine release smile.gif

hehehe, yeah I won't dare to get Eddie angry so I'll do my best biggrin.gif

I'm glad it's like this.. Since I'm busy with exams until the middle of June, I won't be able to contribute that much smile.gif

I like the idea too, but I think there should be a maximum of bonus you can get with one 5+ arcticle, to keep the leaderboard (I very like that idea) meaningful.

I'm sure Andrew isn't going to put 5+ and then add 100 on lol or something silly like that. I'd say he'll probably stick with 10 maximum but like he says it depends on the average quality of the article. So if all of the articles are a 4 quality apart from 3 or 4 then i'd imagine it will be a big bonus. I'm sure it will be done in a fair manner. It is just more fair as it makes people go for quality a little more than amount of articles which is not what the competition is about. So as long as you aim for a 5/5 article for every article you write there is a good chance of winning. I've done 2 articles and have a 5 and a 5+ which probably puts me on between 13 and 15 points with current article entries.

It's just to try and get some great articles into the wiki and is a good fair addition. biggrin.gif

Exactly right - as I said in the original announcement, in practical terms, by exceeding the 5 standard, you are probably going to get an extra 1 - 5 points - you have seen what OC did to get that kind of extra grading. However, we don't want to have this same discussion in a week if ZakkWylde counters with a totally awesome article that blows OC away - we will just up our expectations of the what we give in the bonus grades so room for growth is built in.

Fire, I agree about the leaderboard remaining relevant, this is an important part of the contest, to see how you are doing relative to others - there is a little uncertainty of course but not enoug to make it pointless. 5+ articles are still rare, we have 2 so far.

Yep nice. 1-5 sounds good.
Just wondered @ winning with one very good => 40points or stuff like that.
But this way it sounds quite good!!

Actually, if you have an existing article (or anyone elses article not already in the competition) you can submit an "Improvement" entry. We will asses the old version, give it a mark, asses the new version, give it a mark, and credit you with the difference.
