GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ What Amp Or Amps Are You Using?

Posted by: tommyboy Nov 6 2008, 07:55 PM

Since I'm new here but not so new to rock and roll I was curious what you guys are playing on currently. In the 80's when I started playing if you weren't playing a Marshall Amp you may as well have been cutting off your hair and finding a day job. sad.gif However, with all the changes in technology and music styles I though it would be interesting to see the results. Especially since there are so many people from all over the world using this great web site.

Cheers, cool.gif

I guess being here in the USA I didn't figure this so far. I thought I was putting the most popular amp brands out there. I think this is cool. Locally around me kids are really into Line 6 stuff.

It's amazing that with all our technology that tube amps are still the preferred choice among people so far. I agree!!

Engl Sovereign combo which is all tube,
I also have Mesa 2:90 poweramp all tube
and Marshal 8008 poweramp solid state.
This Mesa is really great and powerful
but combo seems a lot faster. smile.gif

I use a Vox DA5 for my guitar and an Ibanez one for my bass.

Posted by: coffeeman Nov 7 2008, 04:32 PM

I don't use an amp , I use a Line 6 Toneport UX1. But I want to start giging next year so I thinking of buying one.

Posted by: inertia Nov 7 2008, 05:49 PM

Two hybrids, a Fender SuperCHampXD and VOX AD30, the Superchamp sounds all tube, the Vox sounds more solid state. Buying hopefully an all tube soon

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Nov 7 2008, 05:51 PM

I use an original Marshall JCM 800 which is an all tube amp smile.gif

Posted by: Ian Bushell Nov 7 2008, 06:40 PM

Hughes and kettner Tri-amp mkI all tubes!

Posted by: Smikey2006 Nov 7 2008, 08:17 PM

for practice when i need to be quiet or i want to mess with cool effects i use a line 6 spider II 30 watt. For my clean/ light distorted stuff i use a Peavey valve king half stack 100watt and for really metal stuff i use my baby my Krank Revolution 100watt halfstack. as far as tone is concerned all tube is the way to go.

I'm playing the Nemesis by Eden NC115 bass combo amp! I couldn't be happier ! smile.gif

Posted by: Fran Nov 7 2008, 10:21 PM

I use a Fender solidstate, but truth is I'm not using it much lately, as I tend to play my guitar through pandora and into my computer lately, or headphones when it's late at night.

I use a very basic Solid State 65w Crate Amp. It has clean, distortion, and reverb.

Yeah,I used wrong word I guess, response would be right one. smile.gif
You know, with combo you have few very short cables and
everything is optimized,connection wise.
With racks and stuff you have a lot more cables,
sound needs to go take a long walk before
it comes out of the speaker.
Less cables=better response,dynamics etc. smile.gif

I don't have any real amps. Only play with the POD.

I am probably buying a Marshall in the future.

But my ideal amp is a 4 channel amp:
channel 1 - Fender on cleans
channel 2 - Marshall on crunch
channel 3 - Marshall on OD1
channel 4 - Mesa distortion

Posted by: Canis Nov 8 2008, 03:43 PM

I only have an puny little Squier amp...
But I don't use that at all. I use my Behringer Guitar Link though Guitar Rig 3. I wanna get a Tuneport UX1 or UX2 though..

Which model JCM 800? I used to play through a JCM 800 model 2205. I should have never gotten rid of it. But i needed college money at the time. It's now been replaced with a JCM 2000 DSL which I love just as much!!

Then I shall give it a deep try. smile.gif

How does it compare to a JVM? Cause I tried this one before. I didn't like the OD2 much (but maybe it was more of my bad settings). Cleans were fine, but still not like a fender dual reverb.

Haven't had the chance to mess with a JVM. However, I can speak volumes about the JCM 2000 DSL. The most organic I've ever owned. That's coming from a old JCM 800 user and lover. The clean channel is the best Marshall has done to date. To get that punchy Fender tone you use the gain and volume opposite how you normally would. With the channel in Classic Gain/Clean Channel you crank the volume and use the gain knob to control your volume. This causes you to get that natural tube compression that Fenders are famous for. In terms of OD and Crunch is pure Plexi and JCM 800. Run the baby through a couple of Marshall 1960 cabs and turn the volume up and it's pure Marshall roar in all it's glory. It's what every modeling amp is trying to produce but the compression of real power amp tubes just can't be duplicated.

Plus you can get a mint used JCM 2000 for 1/2 the price of a used JVM. Also the amp has bias test points so biasing and changing tubes is a piece of cake.

I use a Peavey 6505+ 100 watt head with the matching 4x12 slant cabinet. Through the effects loop I run a TC Electronics G-Major processor controlled by a Behringer MIDI pedal board. I run my Les Paul Standard (w/Suhr Doug Aldrich pickups) through a Beyer wireless to a Crybaby wah into the front of the amp.

It's basically the same thing except without additional features and a couple of sounds. Bad thing with these amps is they all sound different, so you may have heard some model with stock tubes, and it sounds very poor. With hi quality tubes, these amps really turn into great sound machines.
Cleans of Fender and Marshall are pretty different, so it will definitely not be as a Fender Dual Reverb - ever. But cleans are very nice and can be bright with a right set of tubes, so they sound great. I actually like JCM2000 cleans more than Fender, don't like that sparkling highs in Fenders.

Ivan- you and I would love jamin together. Sounds like you have very similar tastes when it comes to tone. Give me a Marshall wall and I'm happy!! wink.gif I agree with the clean tone. Fenders can be a bit bright. I think they became the standard like Marshall for Crunch. So everyone thinks Fender for Clean, Marshall for Crunch and Mesa Rec. for Metal.

All my amps are from Mesa Boogie, I am using either Tripple rectifiers or Triaxis/2:90. I still have my old Marshall but I guess the last time I used it was in the middle of the 90's wink.gif
