"Phrasing". You've heard the word used a lot. What does it really mean and how does one do it well? It's not as hard as you may think. I really like this guys phrasing. He has great control and technique that come together for very expressive play. What do you think of his phrasing and what famous player has the BEST PHRASING according to your ears?

What a beautiful playing!!! I didn't know about him but definitely I will watch more of his videos. smile.gif

About your question " what famous player has the BEST PHRASING according to your ears", I can't choose just a name because when it's about phrasing, in all these years I always had the same 3 favorites players (their names are in random order): Andy Timmons, Darius Wave and Marcus Deml. smile.gif

The words 'phrasing' and 'soulfull', at least with guitar players, have come to mean slow, lots of bends, extreme dynamics, playing with your fingers and the random 'blues lick' explosion.
For me, it's about the construction of a melody (or even just a lick) over the course of a section of music, whether that's an entire song or just an 8 bar solo. Something that reacts to the music around it, improves it and moves it somewhere else. Something that breaths.

Here's my opinion of what good phrasing is. Skip to 2:08 for the solo ...

A completely different approach but employing the same musical aesthetics. Solo at 2:02 ...

And another. Solo at 1:01 ...

in reply to your "good"samples , I have never liked his playing (synister gates ), to me this is a good example of phrasing that has been forced together rather than smooth transitions , at times alright , but many times he shreds and has to "sit " on a note until its time to go on

Phrasing is a very under rated skill to be sure. Of all the things I teach it's one of the things that seems to come up not as often as Id expect. Eventually, every player has to find phrasing that works for them and that makes their playing style unique. I still love Steve Vai for phrasing. He always seems to find the most obscure influences and turn them in to something cool.

Well said smile.gif It's come to mean just about anything that makes a given set of notes more musical than just a scale but then again I've got a pretty broad definition. Some great examples in your vids! That Bark at the moon solo is still one of my faves. Wads of folks play it as a rite of passage on youtube. It should be included in my "PARTY PIECE" series.
