Finally at the stage to buy an RG and the one I want which is pretty much exactly what I've been after is available used.

Problem is the guy won't do paypal and I'm wary of sending money via a bank transfer to a stranger in Finland!

We have a thing in the states called a 'money order'. It's essentially a check that is made out to the recipient via a bank or the post office (even some retail outlets). You give the shop the money and they give you this money order and you send the money to the seller.
Also, Western Union wire transfers of funds. Same thing really but WU sends it electronically.

Typically there's a small fee for both.

Maybe ask the bank if they've ever had issues with Finland - ?

It's a case of trust.

I can send money via my bank but he could quite easily not send me the guitar or the guitar isn't in the condition promised etc.

I can paypal him the money which gives me protection but gives me the power to open a dispute over a period of 180 days for a refund should I say I didn't receive the guitar, or it is broken etc.

Neither option is great for 2 strangers in two different countries.

I could opt for him sending it via UPS which gives him more proof of delivery but that would cost €150 for a €750 guitar

As you say it is a complete case of trust.

I would not pay by bank transfer with something at that value. To Risky.

You as the buyer a would only accept paying by paypal and if I was the seller I would only accept a bank transfer. Its a tricky situation for both. I would say pass on it if you arent able to pay by PayPal. Might of lost a guitar you want but its better than loosing a guitar you want and youre money. smile.gif

Yeah its risky, as you mention even if he were trust worthy the guitar could have a problem he might even not realize.

Won't do paypal? That sends a big red flag up for me. I'm sure some folks hate paypal for whatever reason. however,
as a buyer of guitars, I can say it's saved the bacon on many deals and protected me from getting ripped off.
Paypal allows for recourse on bad sellers, it's one of the few ways you can have recourse in such transactions.
if it's not a local buy, and he won't take paypal, I'd be very careful indeed. Personally I don't do business with folks that don't take paypal as far as doing business over the web goes. A local transaction would be different, but in another country? Yeah, he could send you anything and you'd have no recourse without paypal. Not everyone uses paypal, but every reputable buyer/seller I've ever done business with has. I'm sure there are many who dont use paypal who are trustworthy, sadly I won't be able to find out as I've been burned too many times by folks who didn't use paypal so I don't do biz with those folks anymore.

It's your call and you gotta make it. But make sure you are ok with it. smile.gif

Yikes. I gotta agree with the rest here, Too risky. Another guitar will come along. Be patient. For myself, I would certainly not do it. Not even using paypal because even though there is recourse if the deal went sour, I wouldn't want to even deal with that hassle. But then again, in my case it is probably much easier to find a guitar that I can put my hands on first before I make the decision to spend my hard earned money on it.

Well after all I've said, it has been brought to my attention from another member of The Gear Page that the seller is also a longtime member, an established guitar teacher and to some extent trustworthy. The fact that he was also selling it locally gives me some confidence. So wish me luck...

Best of luck smile.gif All those things are encouraging. Hoping it's a smooth transaction. It's a lot of money for a guitar you've never put your hands on. I ended up taking the same risk with my 3570. I bought it sight unseen/unplayed from ebay. There were pictures on ebay, but I didn't know when they were taken or if it would be the same instrument depicted in the pix. Just hoped for the best and made my offer. The bidder above me bailed out so I got a great deal as a bonus. I was lucky and the guitar had been a "case queen" and just needed some contact spray on the tone knob and it was back to factory condition. I hope you have a similar experience smile.gif Trying to find a classic MIJ ibby can be tough. Especially when you want a certain model, in good condition. Finding one locally was simply impossible. I finally found one on reverb but it was over a thousand bux, the one I got turned out to be perfect. Let us know how it goes!

risky. end of story. if something goes wrong, you have little recourse. Banking on the good faith of someone in that event is a gamble. For one thing they sometimes think they are in the right, and that you are in the wrong, trying to pull something off, and they will dispute whatever you say.

The nice thing is that he agreed to pack the guitar how I wanted, (unfortunately it doesn't come with a case) but it will be gig bag, bubble wrap, cardboard box, bubble wrap, cardboard box.

I'll wait until I receive the guitar to post pictures, I don't want to jinx anything. Apparently rumour has it this model got the left over JPM model necks after Pettruci left Ibanez.

He's also selling a beautiful Candy Red drip Suhr Modern for €1850 if anyone is interested!

Make SURE he gets full insurance for above the price you are paying for it. If he doesn't insure it properly, the whole thing can go very wrong. Which JPM neck does it have? The 1997-99 necks have the original wizard profile. The others are just a pinch thicker. But they are all nice necks smile.gif
