Very interesting topic. As a bass player that plays finger style, I rearly get to use the pick nowadays. Never had any "boutique" ones. I think that pick is important as its what essentially makes the actual contact with the stings and translates what you do with your picking hand. I would guess that higher quality picks are made with more precision and with higher quality materials.

I'm really interested to hear feedback on this topic as I never really though much about it before wink.gif

I don't really go for looks, but if it looks good and it plays good, that's always a plus in my book smile.gif

The most expensive pick I got? The Dunlop Max Grip Jazz III. Carbon fibre biggrin.gif

The least expensive would be a chinese plastic pick I have, its white in color and 0.46mm in thickness, I got it for free tongue.gif

Yes I think the right pick obviously increases your dexterity and speed. Generally, people who like to play fast like smaller than average picks with pretty sharp points. The Jazz III is a little too small for me but I've gotten used to it very nicely, its the best pick I have smile.gif for rhythms though, I need a more thick sound, So I use my Musician's Gear pick, its large (lots of surface area, IMHO it gives a thicker tone) and sharp (so my pick doesn't get stuck when I'm playing), thickness 1.21mm.

You should check out our very own Von Hotch's picks if you're interested in picks as much as I am smile.gif Here: http://vonhotch.com/

I got some Huffschmid picks recently, and they run about $20 each, but I"m going to review them in a vid and the vendor was nice enough not to charge me which was very cool. Also the VONHOTCH picks run about $20, and they are amazing. Beyond that , my VPICK signature picks run about 6 bux each.

Picks can be pricey!

todd 20 dollars is too much, In my country you can get lifetime supply of picks for 20 dollars tongue.gif . I think you can even manage to get a guitar for that much.

In an industry where there is a lot of hype, and fanboyism, I have to say that V-picks have made one of the biggest positive changes in my playing, both in tone and better picking technique and potential for speed (I'm still not that fast but getting there!).

I started off with the small pointed for a couple years, the thickness of that really helped relax my hand and forearm muscles. I know use the stiletto.

I tried other generic picks but the sound and feel horrible to me. At $4 a pick it's a fair price for something that is fairly labour intensive, especially with v-picks great customer service and the exchange rate!

I've tried lots of picks, but never expensive ones just different sizes and shapes out of all the picks I've used dunlop sharps 1.14 are my choice. I stock up on um so I always have new ones when they start to dull. With the sharps I'm seem to be able to play a bit cleaner and more precise or maybe I just got used to them and improved in my skill a bit. Either way I haven't found anything else worth the extra dough yet.

I'm a devoted user of Jim Dunlop Jazz III's. Especially those Ultex ones, they're invincible.

Still, if I'm playing lights chords or something, I'll use a much thinner pick for the lighter tone.

I've seen Andy James play, and while he is an AMAZING musician, I think (from what I saw), he uses the pick on the strings in a manner that they "slice" the strings as someone would slice a fruit with a knife (like going across the strings at a very small angle), especially when he sweeps.

From experience and talking to other musicians, that's not recommended, you don't get that much attack and volume from your picking. But if that is what works best for him, I say he should stick to it! Picking is everything about preference smile.gif

I need small and sharp because the less the surface area that hits the strings, the quicker I can hit the next note and not get stuck on that string if I want to move on to the next one. You should definitely go to your local music store and try out picks, just as you try guitars, and pick the one you love by then smile.gif

Just buying one good pick will save you the hassle and money of buying a hundred picks that don't suit you smile.gif then buy another good one when you need to and when you have the money to. Don't go for looks, function is always a lot more important than looks, because let's face it, no one is going to be looking at your pick, because its just squashed between your fingers. But it'll make a big difference for you, whether or not the pick is comfortable when playing smile.gif

I got a huge chuckle out of your reply, thanks for that smile.gif A lifetime supply would be nice!! I left out the least expensive picks. If you are looking for a cheap pick to try, I'd suggest

1.)Clayton 1.5 acetyl (Then sharpen them with a boot knife)
2.)Dunlop Sharp 1.5 (sharp from the factory)
3.)Vpick switchblad (sharp but about 5 bux each)

Notice the sharp idea coming up alot? Some folks love round picks it's true smile.gif And different things work for different........yadayada etc.

Long story short try lots of stuff smile.gif Round picks can increase speed by decreasing precision due to simply gliding over the strings. There's plenty of ways to skin a given cat smile.gif

Strangely I use a tortoise shell mandolin pick on my acoustic, I'll have to scan it, you wouldn't believe how rounded and without a hint of a point that thing is.

That cost me around $15 10 years ago.

It could probably do with a little shaping, but it has an amazing warm tone, and feel that nothing has yet to match. Though I haven't tried the Blue Chip priced picks yet.

BTW send a PM to VONHOTCH or email him through his web site www.vonhotch.com and he will set you up with some custom picks of your own. He's been great about hooking up GMC folks with his killer pick designs. smile.gif

BTW here is a pic of the Hufshcmid picks that I was talking about. I like them quite a bit, but It's hard to switch from the von smile.gif
