Hey guys! I'll be playing hotel california by the eagles in a few weeks at school, and they want me to do a solo but i'm not sure what key would best suit the song.

The chord progression for the verse is Bm, F#, A, E, G, D, Em, F#

any advice??

Yeah those chords are all good with Bm, I think this is the original key of the song as well so its all cool! Its quite a hard song to play on your own this, the Eagles use about three different guitarists for this number so good on you for giving it a whirl!

It doesnt fully fit into Bminor, though it sounds fine tongue.gif

Bminor : B C# D E F# G A

Bm : B D F#
F# : F# A# C# has an A# which could make it B harmonic minor
A : A C# E
E : E G# B has a G#
G : G B D
D : D F# A
Em : E G B

It would be fully Bminor if the progression went Bm F#m A Em G D Em F#m

Maby what Im saying is wrong but Im really interrested so it would be great if a instructor could explain what modes to use ohmy.gif Trying to work it out for myself now tongue.gif

Ok I have read an article about this, and both F#maj + Em is outside chords.
The writer of the article wrote that eagles didn't care much about the key's tonal chords.

However, adress the chords' 3rds as passing notes, meaning do not land firmly on them when they are playing, in your solo.

It has a very dorian feel, and seemingly modulates from B dorian to D Ionian or something like that.
I would experiment with B Dorian, Bminor, and D major and try to compose something if I were you.

I read that in spanish flameco, they use andalucian cadences that are like Bm A G F#, which isn't diatonic.
I am pretty sure this is a double-tonic progression. You could replace Em and F#maj with Esus and F#sus though, and it would become diatonic. It does affect the feel a little.

Let's wait for an instructor's verdict!

It's key of Bm but you have to be aware of few chords,
F# requires A# note which means B Harmonic or even Melodic minor,
E chord requires B Dorian tho cause of G# note in E chord.
For everything else you can play natural B Minor, B minor Pentatonic etc.

I'm playing it with two others guys, you're right it'd be too hard to play it by myself.

Yeah, Ive got a backing that has the harmonies for the arpggios at the end but everything lse is played by me, its quite frantic and you dont get the distinct two guitar sounds "Battling" each other. Fantastic solo this though, I might upload it as a video, just the solo part tho, lol!

That looks like Hotel California chord progression smile.gif

For F# chord use B harmonic minor or simply F# arpeggio
For E chord use B dorian mode or E arpeggio

Everything else is pretty much B natural minor, Minor pentatonic or Blues scale smile.gif
