I've been trying to increase the quality of my REC takes, so I recently picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 to record my guitar tracks to a DAW and edit it into the video. I will be using a couple of mics, a Sennheiser e609 and MXL ribbon mic to record the amp.

From the videos I've seen on Youtube, the sound of a dynamic mic up close and a ribbon mic a bit further away is pretty much the sound I'm looking for. The Scarlett has two mic inputs so I should be good.

However, I would rather record directly in to the camera, a DSLR, and remove a tedious step of editing from the whole process. So I've been considering getting a USB mixer, such as the Alesis MultiMix 4 USB or the Behringer 802 USB to record. It seems like the USB mixer also acts as a sound card, so the backing track will play directly into the mixer. Then the mics will record the amp, and I can monitor it through a pair of headphones. I may be wrong, but it seems like I can plug the the Mains Out directly into the camera.

Do you guys see any issues with this setup?

Everything you'll hear thats coming out of the mixer will be recorded to the stereo input (as the main outs are also connected to the usb recording input).

So the backing track+your recording will be combined in the same stereo track and since their lenght will be the same with the video, editing will be quick...did I understand correct? smile.gif

sounds right, why most people don't do this is there is no way for post production , so as this might make it easier to get quick video. You will never got great audio production. and the time you spend up front making sure audio is set correct so that everything can be heard correctly will be just as long as syncing your video with your daw . more than anything , the longest part of recording is the number of takes to get it perfect and the process up above wil lnot shorten bad takes

Yeah, to get back to the sound (in audio mastering) there is an approach called m/s eq.ing but that won't be much of a help either. Noise will be another problem...

Might be obvious but do you also record the room sound from camera? on computer the wave form similaritys could help. Also an assistant that has one of these biggrin.gif

You got it smile.gif It does make everything easier once you have it set. You are front loading the work is all. Like crsn said. But once you get things set right. its pretty much, turn on the camera, start your DAW and play! You can watch back the results or just do several takes and let the camera run and pick the best one. Recording direct to camera takes a lot of work out of the way.

I do something similar. I record directly to a quicktime movie. Quicktime will take different audio and video, there is a PC utility that comes with logitech web cams that does the same thing. You set your camera video source and your mixer as audio source and it records to a quicktime movie with sound. Bam, done. Just upload. No need to transfer data from the camera or anything and you can watch it on your computer right then to see if you like it.

Not every camera can do this and I dont know of any dslr that can do it. I'm using an older canon camera with firewire and the audio comes with with USB. It weaves them together and bingo. Done.

Thanks for the response guys biggrin.gif I wish I found out about this before I got the Focusrite. The only problem now is my laptop is too slow to handle video editing software. So I kind of have to get a new laptop if I want to sync audio with video. Which leads me to my next question...

Is it possible to sync audio in VLC? I have it now, and it seems like my laptop can handle it.

I don't think vlc can do that. sad.gif It would be news to me for sure. You can always just take the headphone output from your FOCUSRITE and run it directly to your camera right?
