They put this off to the side for me at Sam Ash. I am hoping to get it around $650 because of a sale they are running.

Reasons why I want it:
Love gold-top Les Pauls
My Epiphone LP is not cutting it
I have an extra Ibanez S470 that I am selling.

Is this a good guitar to replace two of my others? I already have a 'fast' RG-570 so I don't really need the S anymore and I am thinking that this might be a step up from the Epi Les Paul.

If you get it for 650$ I think it will be a good deal, would at least be in Norway!
I`m not the biggest fan of goldtops, but I do love those guitars! I am drooling over a similar ESP Eclipse in a local shop here which is absolutetly AMAZING, but converted from norwegian prices it costs around 2500$ (and thats a NICE price because I know the owner) sad.gif

I don't like the ESP ltd 1000 series very much...
They sound and feel like the much cheaper 400 oder 401 series (even the same hardware) but they add a little optical stuff like inlays and bindings and sell it for more money...

The Gibson Les Paul Studios cost roughly the same but are at least twice as good! American made versus Korean Made...
The Gibson is made out of the better sounding wood with a better crafting, comes with equally good hardware and a high quality Case - and they just sound a lot better than the ltd1000.

If you really want an Eclipse, spend some more money and get a Japanese made REAL ESP Eclipse! Great guitars!

I just watched some vids of it and did not like it much.

THIS looks better. It is something I might be able to weasel myself into. I really want the thick, LP tone and, call me vein, I want it to be attractive. The LP studios just would be a tease to me. Any suggestions?

Sorry mate but you can not expect a THICK Les Paul Tone from an Esp Eclipse...

The classic Les Paul tone that we all LOVE comes from the Thick honudras Mahogany bodies and thick necks of the Gibson Les Pauls.
The Esp Eclipse sound very diffrent to a Gibson Les Paul, not as warm and thick but bright and more responsive!

1. The body of the Eclipse is only half as thick as a Gibson
2. The ESP necks are pretty slim - better to play on but it takes A LOT of the tone
3. The ESP guitars are made from a diffrent type of mahogany. It has diffrent tonal chrarcteristics (more attack, edgier tone) while the honduran mahogany Gibson uses kinda reacts slower but gives a much warmer tone...

There is an ESP Eclipse series called *Full Thickness* - Those have thicker bodies and come closer to a Les Paul tone but the wood diffrence and thin neck stay.

My advice for an affordable HUGHE Gibson tone WITH the Looks you want so badly:

Gibson Les Paul Standard faded (cheaper than the normal standards but all the Specs and tone are the same, diffrent type of laquer)

OR

Do like I did and get a used Les Paul Standard! I paid only half the price it costs new!

they look nice but I agree wth Zakk, A used LP is a much better option if you can find something you like.

I agree with Zakk too, used Gibson is definitely a way to go, and it pays out to wait for it a while, until you find a good deal. If you cannot wait, Gibson Studio is good choice for a new guitar too, the tone and craftsmanship are there, for smaller cost.

If you're patient, you can find new, or next new ESP Eclipse's on eBay for less than that price at Sam Ash.

I agree. They also hold value as well, and perhaps better than any other guitar. While I don't expect to make money off of them, I do consider them a pretty solid store of value, fairly close to what you paid, provided you got a good deal. And if you get one used, and are careful to get a good one, you lose nothing at all.

But aside, anyone know what type of guitar Slash played when he first made it big, light brownish with flame? They just put out a reissue of that, and the joke is that this is a Gibson reissue of a Gibson LP copy.

Slash's new signature Les Paul is based on the Kris Derrig Les Paul Copy he used to record Appetite for Destruction. Back then the band was kinda broke so there was no Money for a Gibson Les Paul (in fact there wasn't even money for amps - the whole record was recorded on rented Marshall amps!)

So basicly Gibson put out a Copy of a Les Paul copy as Slash's new signature guitar.

I think you should wait a little and consider getting a Gibson. That is where the real tone lay. Used guitars are great option and you can get them for a nice price too.
