GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Lydian Dominant Flavors In Rock And Metal

Posted by: Jonas Tamas Feb 2 2013, 03:40 PM

Today I'd like to show you a segment from my song „Locrian Locusts”. As you can guess from its title, this song utilizes some arcane scales and modes, like the locrian nat.6 scale, which is derived from the harmonic minor scale. I’ll be happy to introduce you to this really exotic-sounding scale in a future lesson, but for now, however, let’s delve into the middle solo part of this song, in which I’ve used the lydian dominant scale.

Here you can listen to the segment from the song:

Sounds REALLY cool. I never really thought about modes in terms of marrying two modes together. I'm still learning the basics so it would take me some time to digest all this. I really dig the exotic flavors used here though.

Thanks a lot! It's worth experimenting with coming up with short riffs and melodies using lydian dominant, it has a really interesting vibe.
