- How long have you been playing guitar?
>Well, that's a bit shameful. I started when I joined GMC 2008, but I would say I am at a very beginners level.
- Favorite guitarists, bands and musicians.
>I like every kind of metal from power metal to death metal but also more laid back, groovy blues orientated music like Stoner Rock.
>I am a big fan of Colour Haze. Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWn60vLHZoE
- What are your guitar goals?
>I want to have the skills to write and play technical but also melodic solos and songs
- How would you like to you see yourself in 5 years (related to music and guitar)?
>I would like to be able to improvise guitar leads and find fitting melodies over chords. From a technical point of view I would like to be able to play lessons marked with 7+ on GMC.
- How much time do you have to play guitar each day?
>At least 1h every day. In the last weeks when I picked up the guitar again I played a lot more.
- Do you have experience playing live?
>I was in a band for some time and we had a few gigs. It was nothing too serious, though
- Which are your strong and weak points with guitar?
>strong points: My rhythm guitar skills are decent from a beginners point of view. I can play galloping rhythms and tremolo picking at higher speeds.
>weak points: I have no musical background at all, No musical ear, lack of theory, I struggle with timing, I am a slow learner when it comes to learning new songs or lessons.
- What do you know about music theory?
>Well, I can fit all my knowledge into a few sentences. It's not much smile.gif I know there are 12 notes in our musical system. You use these notes to form different scales depending in which order you arrange them. When you create Chords just like scales you follow a specific formula.
Can you record videos of you playing?
- Share audios and videos that reflect your current playing here.
I posted 2 REC takes. There will be more, also in this thread.

Hi mate, thanks for your information! I think that the lessons that you've chosen are good to train your rhythm and technique skills. In order to complement that work (you can continue choosing "in the style of lessons" from our archive), you could work on some solo technique lesson (one that covers bending, vibrato, legato, and / or alternate picking) and you should also dedicate some time of your practice to experiment with scales and improvisation.

I can guide you with any of these things, or we can use this thread to monitor your practice and give feedback.

A little update from me. I have been playing a lot over the weekend smile.gif
I learned and recorded your Megadeth riffing lesson.

These are the next two lessons I started working on

Kris recommended me this one:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Basic-Rock-Rhythm-2/#
Seems like a good fit. I am looking forward to learn it.

The other one is the Led Zepplin lesson by Adrian
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/My-Favorite-Zeppelin/

Here is my current progress:

The chorus part with the chords needs more attention. I think I need more pronounced dead notes and better (start) timing for the filling lick. Anything else I should focus on?

You'll notice I didn't play the last part with the strumming of the open chords. It's because I have absolutely no idea how to do this wink.gif
I tried to get the strumming pattern down first but so far no success. I can't even do it really slow. Normally when I can't wrap my head around how to play a part I set it to 20% speed in guitar pro. Unfortunately, this part is not tabbed and I am a bit lost here.

About theory:
I already know the a minor pentatonic. So if I am not mistaken I can get the full a minor scale when I add a B and a F. which also makes it a C Major scale. I am still working on learning all the notes on the fret board, so simply adding the B&F note is not as easy as it seems smile.gif

Hi mate, thanks for the update!

I think that the lesson (Zeppelin) is going well. I notice that you tend to rush a bit tempo during the main riff, and also in the part starting at 00:34. You really need to focus on timing here. This groove and slow tempo is not easy at all.

Regarding the strumming section, I found the tab in part 7 and Adrian plays it slowly there. Have you seen it?

Finally, I also would like to recommend you Kris's Jam School series for improvisation. Also his "My first phrases" lesson is very helpful. I'd like to see you exploring these lessons and sharing your improvisations here.

What do you think?

That's a great idea. I will upload my improvisation over the backing and have a look at Kris's Jam School.
Regarding the Led Zeppelin lesson: In part 7, he is showing the main riff. In part 9 he is playing the riff I have problems with slowly but I still can't figure out the strumming. The tab is there, but the riff is much more than just the chords. Any idea on how I can get down the strumming pattern?

I've been ill the last week so I couldn't play as much guitar as I wanted. I am better now, so here is the next update.

At the moment I am practicing 3 things:
1. The Basic Rock Rhythm #2 by Darius. I can play it through but need more time with it. This is the hardest lesson (for me) yet.
2. The Led Zeppelin lesson. I learned the last part like you showed me. I am still working on it to play it up to speed. The strumming still does not feel quite natural to me. I attached a gp5 file where I tabbed out the strumming. Please tell me if it's correct. smile.gif
Attached File  Zeppelin_endriff.gp5 ( 1.74K ) Number of downloads: 106

3. Jamming over the backing track as you recommended. I don't have much experience with jamming so I am just getting started there.

I figured out a solution to record my DAW and my webcam at the same time into one video file so I can just hit record and have something to show you. This will make creating videos in the future much easier for me.

Hi mate! Thanks for the update!

It's great to know that you'll be sharing videos regularly here. That's the best way to monitor your progress. What are you doing to record both video and audio at the same time? We could recommend it to other students!

I'll wait for a take playing Darius lesson.

I've checked your guitar pro transcription and it's perfect. I know that this is tricky but practice slowly every day and it will become natural after some days.

Finally, this is a great first improvisation. We need to practice jamming every day to develop our own voice and phrasing on guitar. I recommend you to continue improvising over this one, and maybe exploring other lessons from Kris's Jam School series. It's important to get inspiration from other players (even from other instruments) to improve our improvisations.

Experiment, focus on different elements like rhythm, bending, vibrato, dynamics, slides. And what's even more important, enjoy! smile.gif

Hey, I had some difficulties with the two lessons. The Led Zeppelin is a bit longer and I kept making mistakes in the later parts so I spend more time with it so that I can play it without major mistakes every time. It's still far from perfect of course but I am feeling some improvement. Do you think both lessons are good enough for the REC or should I spend more time with them?

I was also jamming quite a bit. I had a look at your blues lessons, they are a bit advanced for my current level but I think that's want I want to take on next.

Hi Skalde! Great job here!

The first one obviously needs ore days of practice to minimize errors and to make it sound groovier. The final section is better now, but there are still some differences if you compare it with my video sample.

I think that you need to let your right hand "dance" more with the groove. Check out the original lesson and see how Adrian's right hand is more relaxed and connected with the backings rhythm. There is some extra up and down movement to keep the groove.

The second lesson sounds very good. You just need to be careful with some power chords around 1:00 that have pitch issues.

REC program objetive is to receive feedback from different instructors, so a take is always ready for it!

Hey Gabriel,
this is the lesson I am now working on:

I didn't know about him before but I am really enjoying this style and his music. I want to use this to get into your more challenging blues lesson so I can build a blues foundation and finally get into Stoner Rock which is my favorite kind of music smile.gif

Today was the first day I learned all the notes and have played it through the first time. So I want to practice this over the weekend until I can post it to the REC. Do you notice anything specific I should put my focus on? I am not feeling quite confident with the intro riff yet.
Also one more question: You mentioned in the lesson that you used the HyBrit cab. Is this also from lepou plugins? Because I couldn't find the IR.

Nice mate!! Gary Clark Jr is a very inspiring guitarist! Great to know that you've discovered him thanks to this lesson. I've first heard him when he made a collab with Foo Fighters (Sonic Highways album).

Your playing here is good. There is some room to make everything sound groovier, adjust rhythm and give the right groove feel. This happens with the main riff but also with the solo section. Put some more focus on rhythm, and also in my use of dynamics.

Besides this, I hear some pitch issues in the solo section, and some vibrato and micro bending work missing. The pitch issues can be related to your guitar set up, but it can also be related to your fingers. Listen carefully and identify the issue. Compare your take with mine, play along with my solo. Listen.

Regarding cabs, I've used one of this: LINK.

Hey Gabriel,

before I recorded my recent REC takes I had my guitar set up by a professional. Here is a video of me playing the open strings and the 12th frets. Is there anything I can fix here or are the tuning issues coming from my playing?

Hi mate, your guitar seems to be working well. If it was well tuned when recording Gary Clark Jr take, the reason must be related to your finger pressure. Are you doing too much strength when pressing the fret?

Please check out and try what is explained in this video:
