Guess These Modes

To help build our understanding and application of the different theory concepts we are covering here in the Professor’s Theory Guide, I will be posting various licks for us to analyze and check out together.

Here is the second lick, written out below in tab and notation.

To begin, try and learn the pattern on the guitar, always good to apply any theory concept and scale pattern to your instrument.

Here is a backing track to help you practice this lick over the given chord progression. The chord progression on the backing track is:

Bm/Em/G/D/

 Bm_Em_G_D_Backing_Track.mp3 ( 6.93MB ) : 274

And here is the lick itself.

Then, try and answer the following questions, posting them below and using the “spoiler” button to the left of this page to keep others from seeing your answers.

1. What is the Scale used over the entire lick?

2. What are the modes used in Bar 1, Bar 2 and over the 2 chords in Bar 3 and 4? 4 Modes in total.

3. What melodic technique, besides the scale, is used in bar 3 of the lick?

4. What are the Roman Numerals, or numbers, for the chord progression over this lick?

5. What would that chord progression be in the key of A?

Here are the answers for those that want to check them out.

Spoiler:
1. G Major
2. B Phrygian, E Aeolian, G Ionian, D Mixolydian
3. Arpeggios
4. iii vi I V

Post your answers below and I’ll be glad to check them out and help out with any questions you may have about this lick and mode.
