I've been watching this interesting video about the way in which we perceive our own voice and they way in which others hear it. Watch it below:

This dude, explains why we are shocked to hear how our voice really sounds like when it's being recorded - I have an issue with this idea, because usually - not all the time - I dislike the way my voice sounds smile.gif

In what regards vocal technique and maturity as a vocalist, I think I am a bit young smile.gif as I tend to want to do this and that, instead of focusing on honing my skills based on what my voice is capable of doing (I have more of an RnB potential as a vocalist, rather than a screamer or such - pretty nasty, huh? sad.gif) I think it's a good idea to try and focus on getting the most of my voice, while accepting my tone and not being frustrated that I can't sound like Scott Stap from Creed laugh.gif

Have you guys ever had a shock when hearing yourselves recorded? Are you comfortable with the way your voice sounds like?

I am not a fan of my 'singing' voice. I was in choir throughout high school and I can hit some pretty solid bass tones, but I don't view that as useful. My screaming on the other hand... Decent Black Metal Screeches if I have been practicing. I have never really seen myself singing in a band(even though I want to do it sometimes). I just don't think my vocal timbre is good enough to do it.

I watched that video before and immediately grabbed some books to try it out smile.gif

Generally, I hate my singing voice biggrin.gif I can't reach high tones, and I'm only comfortable singing songs within the range of Comfortably Numb, or anything by Voltaire. But metal, rock, high pitches - no way! biggrin.gif

I sing in my cover band. We have a female lead singer too so we share, but she's not always there and I often have to do it all myself (we remove some songs when she doesn't come)

I've only been doing this since late last year. I'm getting better, but like anything else it takes time. First time I heard my singing voice played back to me I was shocked. Hated it. But I'm getting used to it now.
