After my last minute rush to get a (somewhat failed) video into Cosmin's last collab, I went and got a new camera yesterday. Works great, so no more video/file issues!

Today at work, I took a moment to put together a quick take of my progress on Cosmin's "Vivaldi: Winter Arpeggios" lesson. I'm not quite at the lever/full speed to submit a REC vid yet. Pretty "close", but sometimes that small improvement from 80% to 100% (speed, accuracy and technique) is the most difficult to achieve!

But to be honest, I think it will just come down to putting in the time and repetition on this piece. To be my own critic, I think most of my problems at this point are....

-picking hand is too wild. Minimize strokes, to improve efficiency

-playing it more. Though I'm "familiar" with the piece, I need to run it more until it's "second nature" as opposed to this vid...you can see me watching and "thinking" my way through the riffs a bit too much.

-I know the last note is staccato. I let it ring too much.

-Cleaner on the epic, end riff run!

-More precise timing

-Not letting notes ring out, as I change positions down the neck from part to part

Again, I think it will come with some solid repetition. I hope I can get along enough to submit a REC soon, otherwise I'll be busy with gigs and I may ultimately fall BACKWARDS if I go too long without putting time into this piece.

Hey Gab! smile.gif nice take man and what's nicer, is that you have pointed out the weak spots YOURSELF! Being self critical and able to see what you need to work on with steel cold mind is a very important aspect of evolution in any field wink.gif

I think you have what it takes to succeed on this one and I am also looking forward to include you in my ongoing collab, now that you have a cam and we can work swifter together!

Let's rock my friend!

Thanks for the support Cosmin. Also, since you had formerly asked about "how long it takes" to get a lesson up to REC speed, I've kept a closer eye on how much time I've put into this piece.

As mentioned, now that I've come this far.... I can keep that time down, by staying on this riff and getting to REC speed quickly. The more time I stay away, the longer it will take to get BACK to where I am now!

Thanks for the compliments! In fact, it's due to my short time here at GMC and also the awesome feedback from you and other instructors, that has helped me to more quickly identify "mistakes" (aka: room for improvement!!) more quickly and thoroughly. I never had a problem taking advice, but I had played for many years without great input and criticism from awesome players, such as yourself. It has made a big difference in a short time. But I'm looking forward to the long-term!! Eventually I may have to get involved in both a weekly video chat/practice routine, and also some of the "mentoring" that's been picking up steam around here lately.

And I just can't wait to see the lesson on your "Grunge vs Metal collab solo"!!! That was so tasty! Shreddy, but you spared no expense in ensuring that the solo had tasty phrasing all the way through. Very impressed!!

Nice playing! smile.gif And camera looks great! I notice that you seem to be not choking up very far on your pick and it looks like you are having to over commit just a bit on each pick stroke. It's a small thing really, just a matter of a couple of millimeters so not a huge deal. Just for a test, see if you can grip the pick just a tad closer to the tip. It can make picking easier and more precise. smile.gif Also, very nice guitar!

Thanks Todd! I absolutely LOVE my Parker! Haven't had her even a year, but she's already given me more than any guitar yet. Something about the neck/frets that just works with my hand, and I find the tones to be very versatile. I play country/jazz/funk/blues/rock and more (now, even acoustic with the piezo pickup!!) and it has great tones for each!

I'll certainly try to work on the picking hand, and choking up a bit. I KNOW I can do better on this piece, with my picking hand. But I do have a strange "handicap" in my picking hand thumb.... the very top joint doesn't actually "grip"!! I can move it, so it looks like it grips, but all the movement comes from other muscles in my hand, and if you press "up" against that top thumb joint, I can't push back against you! The other thumb can hang on like a champ. Not sure when or where I "popped" that muscle/ligament/tendon, but SOMETHING went wrong years ago!!

So, to compensate, I have to press/hold the pick closer to the middle thumb joint, and first finger. Sometimes I even throw my middle finger on the bottom side to provide more grip. But now that I'm learning to chicken pick, I'm trying to get away from using the middle finger at all to grip my pick. It's really annoying, and I believe it holds me back just a bit (well, it certainly doesn't HELP!!).

Not making excuses, 'cause my picking hand is way too wild in that video, to get to full speed. But also....my picking hand needs a handicapped parking sticker!! tongue.gif

Gabe, here are two of my versions - one recorded last year when I was rehearsing for playing it first time with the orchestra and the second is the actual live recording from one of the concerts:

You will notice some level of suckyness here and there (especially at the tapping part which for some reason came out pretty dirty) biggrin.gif but hey, I'm only human tongue.gif

Very, very awesome to see it in action with "Mozart Rocks"!! I had watched a few other vids of this piece after starting on this lesson (thanks...I had never explored Vivaldi. Great stuff!) and found some great performances. So, it was especially awesome to see you tackle some of the earlier portion of the piece, that I had seen performed on violin only.

Maybe someday I'll attempt to tackle the whole piece....for now, I'm gonna have to stick with the arpeggios lesson!! That's a brutal piece to learn!! Though you played amazingly in the old take, you can tell that you've "sharpened up" that arpeggios section especially. Did you end up devoting some extra time/effort into that, thus giving inspiration for the lesson?

Though it's hard to hear you in the mix on the Mozart Rocks performance, I think you played well. But, I can relate a bit from EMULATOR.... sometimes, no matter how tight I have something down, it's so different on stage with the mix, lights, lasers, crowd, band energy and more. Basically, it isn't uncommon for one of us to have a quick "slip" on something we otherwise have down tight. Usually not to the point the crown notices, but enough to frustrate us!! I can't imagine how different it is performing that piece at home, vs. live. The dynamics must be difficult.

With this piece, the most difficult part is that you have no drums smile.gif and when I play it with the orchestra, there's no first violin - I am the solo violin laugh.gif and it's nasty as hell to keep up with the dynamics of the orchestra. In December, I performed alongside the Cluj Philharmonic Orchestra - these guys performed with Deep Purple as well and they are very tight and aggressive - just perfect for us rock guys tongue.gif

This is the first video I watched, after getting into the lesson

So, I certainly feel your pain on trying to express the dynamics of the violin line near the beginning!! WOW!!

Either way, you are rocking it! And what a challenge to overcome. It must feel great to see pieces like this, once they're brought to the stage. And I thought the preparation for EMULATOR was difficult!!

Gabe, this is the exact piece which pushed me in this musical journey smile.gif Vivaldi's music has incredible feel and dynamics to it, plus, a very fresh sound which has nothing to do with the shreddy neo-classic stuff which I grew bored of - too many Yngwie copies out there, if you ask me smile.gif

Mozart Rocks keeps being one of the greatest experiences of my life and I am nervous like hell each time my name is called upon to walk upon that stage... I am not even 10% at the level of mastery some of those people in the orchestras I have played with are and that usually makes me feel teeny tiny among them laugh.gif but eventually, I remind myself that rocking out is what I came to do there biggrin.gif

Emulator seems like a very challenging endeavor as well so, I would appreciate if you could share some of your experiences in that direction biggrin.gif
