Les Paul - inventer of the electric guitar pickup and the solid body guitar. He invented pretty much every analog effect + multi track recording.

Chet Atkins - just a master of the guitar

Pete Townsend - Great show, the real master when it comes to smashing guitars and destroying amps + drumsets at the same time

The Edge - amazing when it comes to bowing/sustaining and delay riffs.

Allan Holdsworth - pretty selfexplainatory if you've ever heard him.

Jimi Hendrix - the inventer of rock. Put his guitar on fire and played on it. Great guitarist and composer, considering how new the electric guitar actually was.

George Lynch - Pretty famous for his dissonant riffs and use of tritonus in metal pretty smoking technique as well.

Ron Thal (AKA Bumblefoot) selfexplainatory, his guitar is a combination of a bumblebee, a foot and a guitar... he's also a great guitarist and has played with Guns and Roses per example.

Eric Clapton no need for explaination

Christophe Godin - the remaker of songs, plays Highway to hell in jazz, sweeps the chordprogression of little wing and sings at the same time... just sick.

Kirk Hammet (spelling?) Guitarist of metallica

Guthrie Govan This man, musician, guitarist... is like all of the others mentioned combined...

Paul Gilbert master of alternate picking and string skipping arpeggios. Has played with mr. BIG and Racer X

Joe Satriani Teacher of Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett and many more. Also a great guitarist, he started the wave of instrumental guitar music, popularized it. (is that even a word?) Would probably be most famous for organizing the G3 tours and his smoking legato technique.

Steve Vai amazing instrumental guitar player. a must see, must listen. Would easily be recognized because he sounds like zappa, just faster and cleaner. Could also be described like talking, his playing sounds like a conversation. Has also played with Frank Zappa.

Frank Zappa - the man, the legend, the myth..

Andy Timmons - Guitarist from Danger Danger and has also persued a solo carreer. Great technique and phrasing, a lot of people consider his tone to be one of the best ever.

Jeff Beck recognized for his "feeling" he has "it". Very high rated guitar player.

Jason Becker - probably the saddest story of all time in the guitar world.. This man had a natural talent to play guitar, he had the musicality and a natural dexterity in his fingers. He also practised an insane amount.. He then got ill and was told he'd only live a couple of years. He does however still live, and he composes music on a laptop. He can't play anymore though, but check out his work with Marty Friedman in Cocophony

Randy Roads - one of the first to bring classical influenses to the rock music. Played with Ozzy in the early days. Died young, unfortunately...

Yngwie Malmsteen The swedish sweeping, neoclassical metal monster.

Mattias IA Eklundh a pretty crazy guy, he is probably most famous for his work with harmonics. Something everyone should check out.

OFC. Kristofer, Muris, Emir, Jose, Ivan, Ian, Marcus, Gabriel, Trond, Davic etc. from our beloved GMC.

I don't have time for more atm. But the list is long.

Brian May - awsome melodies and harmonisation...

MARK KNOPFLER - from Dire Straits. Great tone, fluent phrasing, cool fingerpicking

David Gilmour - from PF, i don't think I'll have to describe him

Guthrie Govan - no comment either biggrin.gif

Alexi Laiho, Kiko Loureiro, Fredrik Thordendal (great metal guitarists from Children Of Bodom, Angra and Meshuggah, respectively)

Rudolf Schenker (Scorpions, composer of great rock ballads)

These are the ones that were left out so far (some of them tho)... smile.gif

Jimi Hendrix isn't on that list, but I suppose he's a bit to obvious. Same goes for John McLaughlin, but he's also pretty obvious I guess.
