Well, actually I'm skilled in copying, I search lot of pictures in the Internet and I make my arrangements, I'm not inventing all this stuff just copying it. Anyway I spend lot of years painting miniatures and I have a good technique there tongue.gif and I'm better at painting than at drawing smile.gif

I have to admit I was a bit skeptacle when I opened this thread.....I mean hand-painting a JEM seems pretty risky to me.

But Juan seriously that looks awsome!!! I would actually pay to have one of my guitar's styled like that!!!

More paintings tomorrow now I'm too tired wink.gif

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Aug 22 2008, 09:57 AM

yeah, I discovered 2 new techniques, one is mixing black color with some water and you can look at the results in the degraded part and the other is that I can use a... "metal stick" (I don't know how to explain it) to remove color and make thin white lines like in the moon/planet rays wink.gif

I will use this knowledge to paint the front biggrin.gif

Posted by: midnight Aug 22 2008, 10:40 AM

I'd love a guitar something like that. What do you charge? wink.gif

Edited for edited language- midnight tongue.gif Sorry about that

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Aug 22 2008, 03:14 PM

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Aug 22 2008, 03:22 PM

I'll varnish it, yeah biggrin.gif

Last picture, I painted this face with a different technique, but it works really good biggrin.gif I'm gonna continue !!

Juan you are both mad (in a positive way) and a genius.

Makes me hope that, that self build explorer comes out soon enough so I can do my own project biggrin.gif

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Aug 22 2008, 04:40 PM

I think that everyone can do what he is able to imagine, so our limit is not in our fingers but also in our mind wink.gif

You should do a lesson on painting, Juan wink.gif

Posted by: Tolek Aug 22 2008, 08:16 PM

Beautiful, man! I´ll send you my JEM to Spain so that you can paint it, too, ok? biggrin.gif

Posted by: kaznie_NL Aug 22 2008, 08:22 PM

Waah!! Very nice drawing!!

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Aug 22 2008, 09:54 PM

Thanks guys !!! the back is almost finished, I should do some ornaments and it will be ok !!! biggrin.gif Tomorrow I will buy varnish smile.gif

I use "acrilic" paint (I don't know if acrilic is the word, I look for it in the translator but I cannot find it... is the paint that works with water, like for painting miniatures). I'm so happy with the results smile.gif

mmm seems interesting, but I prefer my own drawings. The only point where I don't have experience (because I already now how to paint) is with varnish. I varnished the fretboard when I did the scalloped but now I feel a bit afraid... anyway I do some tests and seems to works correctly with acrilic paint.

Thanks for the links !!!

All black ?? no, I don't like completely-black guitars (although I have one tongue.gif) and the reason is because I always wear black clothes so a black guitar doesn't looks good (IMHO)...

About the black guitar yeah it won't look good against black clothes...Its just the edges of guitar that seemed not fitting so cool as others parts of the paint job - to me smile.gif
But its cool this way also ! smile.gif

Have you put protective finish over the back side ?

mmm well, I like the edges... and I think I'll keep it but I have some ideas that I should try... wink.gif

and yes, I varnished the back, actually a light varnish, only 2 times, that's the reason why I didn't upload pics till Friday, because I cannot paint while the back is not dry enough. When I finish all parts I will apply 4 or 5 "varnishes" more tongue.gif

Hi, I've also been kind of a Warhammer Geek once upon a time, just that I played the Lord of the Rings-version of the game tongue.gif biggrin.gif I think have like over 50 Citadel paints in my drawer and around 100 unpainted figures as I haven't painted anything for over a year laugh.gif
One thing that I wonder if would be cool is if you took some metallic paint and drybrushed it over the white surface, maybe it would look a little more "shiny" that way? smile.gif Another thing would be some kind of Lord of the Rings-motive, maybe the door outside Moria with Gandalf and Frodo outside? biggrin.gif

yeah, I think that is important to have a guitar with my OWN specifications. For example for me works better thin strings with 0.7 picks, scalloped neck, etc. That's the reason why I want to change pickups and to change controllers (volume, tone, etc.) and put the a bit near where I play... well, it's important that your guitar works well with your playing style. This design is another way to feel good with my guitar and a good motivation to play this guitar biggrin.gif
My guitar will sound better, for sure !!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Just because its not what you exactly like doesn't mean it looks like crap. I think it looks really cool and unique, even though its not quite my style. I prefer to play style guitars (superstrats, lp's ect.) but I loved it when Dime would use out of the ordinary guitars. Not to mention art is about expression, so just because its not your personal favorite doesn't mean its bad, just different. smile.gif

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's something a 4th grader would do and that everyone would be embarrased to play on a cool guitar wink.gif People have opinions, and although I respect yours I think it's unnecessary to write what you did..
You could've just said that it wasn't your style and that you didn't like it too much. Instead of calling it something a 4th grader would do, and that it would embarass you to play on the guitar Juan has worked very hard on.
And the paintings are actually pretty good, must be one genious 4th grader to do what Juan did wink.gif

Just think about how you put things next time, it makes for a better community smile.gif

Posted by: Fran Sep 2 2008, 11:51 AM

I thoroughly agree with Audiopaal.

Jeff0803 I understand you didn't mean this to offend anyone, but there was no need to be so harsh!, I understand art is subjective and not everybody likes the same style/stuff, granted. But maybe you can be a bit more constructive when expressing your opinion... just my thoughts! wink.gif

I've totally missed this thread.

Combined with a picture later in this thread of a cup with some mysterious, dark fluid in and A STRAW!
Please tell me you are not drinking that? tongue.gif

Secondly by the fact that you actually had the guts to do this to a JEM!?!
Not that Ibanez make so good guitars but you do risk ruining a piece of perfectly fine wood. tongue.gif

Seriously. I would use silk gloves if I was to touch a JEM.
I love it! Very personal, well done.

More respect to Juan and his work would be in order. I myself draw very good, and think Juan did awesome work on his guitar. If you think you can do it better, or done similar stuff, you could give his some constructive criticism about his drawings, not bash him for his own work that is obvious he has put a lot of time and effort to it. With that kind of behavior, don't expect to find any sympathies on the forum. Bashing is never appreciated.

Sorry man, your a great guitar player and seem like a nice guy so dont take it personally, but I just really dont like what you did to that guitar. It makes me sad. sad.gif

well, that's your opinion and I respect it, for sure. And you are not the only person who thinks that, some friends (a few of them) thinks the same and my girlfriend doesn't like too much the back (however she likes the front...).
just say that wait till it will be finished, I wish you like it then, but not everybody have the same taste wink.gif

That's for your comment, and yeah, I'm a good guy !!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

PS: I suppose that you didn't like my old Van Halen-Frankestein style, does it ??

QUOTE (audiopaal @ Sep 2 2008, 09:05 AM) *
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's something a 4th grader would do and that everyone would be embarrased to play on a cool guitar wink.gif People have opinions, and although I respect yours I think it's unnecessary to write what you did..
You could've just said that it wasn't your style and that you didn't like it too much. Instead of calling it something a 4th grader would do, and that it would embarass you to play on the guitar Juan has worked very hard on.
And the paintings are actually pretty good, must be one genious 4th grader to do what Juan did wink.gif

Just think about how you put things next time, it makes for a better community smile.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif Thanks mate !! it reminds me that I won some prices when I was a 4th grader !!! that's true smile.gif
Of course I'm not a professional but I'll never give one of my guitars to a painter because there a lot of symbols, draws, jokes, etc. that he cannot understand...

QUOTE (Fran @ Sep 2 2008, 12:51 PM) *
I thoroughly agree with Audiopaal.

Jeff0803 I understand you didn't mean this to offend anyone, but there was no need to be so harsh!, I understand art is subjective and not everybody likes the same style/stuff, granted. But maybe you can be a bit more constructive when expressing your opinion... just my thoughts! wink.gif

Thanks Fran, don't worry, I'm not offended, I learnt lot of time ago to accept bad and "hurting" comments and take profit.
Well, actually I spend all time thinking in play, draw and have fun... just the same as a 4th grader !!! Oh, what a wonderful years cool.gif

QUOTE (blindwillie @ Sep 2 2008, 01:50 PM) *
Combined with a picture later in this thread of a cup with some mysterious, dark fluid in and A STRAW!
Please tell me you are not drinking that? tongue.gif

hahaha, my mistake, I wanted to say TIRED instead thirsty tongue.gif Anyway I have drunk worse things !!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif ...

Hey, I want to see some of you drawings !! biggrin.gif
Well, I try to do my best, that's all.

That's kind of surprising considering the front is where all the babes are. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Sep 3 2008, 07:56 AM

well, she likes all kind of Gothic-drawings, and actually she has got a flag with a girl in this style tongue.gif (now it is n our living room biggrin.gif)

Well, another pic:

Juan, that headstock looks AWESOME!!!!!

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Sep 3 2008, 03:06 PM

thanks mate, now with some details, and the name of this guitar: Gothika

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Sep 3 2008, 03:12 PM

I think it looks pretty cool. I wouldn't do it to my guitar but you can certainly paint to a high standard. I do love the headstock logo. I prefer natural wood guitars anyway so I hope you don't take offence that I wouldn't do it to my guitars. I think you did a great job though and I'd rather have your design that a JEM which I dislike.

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Sep 3 2008, 03:24 PM

thanks OC, when I bought this guitar I loved the design, but now I don't like the white body and specially I don't like that if you play with this guitar averybody compares you with Steve Vai, and I was so tired about that... tongue.gif

I think it looks really cool, and it is unique. I am guessing that you are planning on clear coating wet sanding and buffing, or you are going to leave it like that?

The reason I ask is because maybe that is why certain people might not see what the final finish will look like

Posted by: Rooks Sep 3 2008, 04:05 PM

Well I won't flame you Juan.. I only have one question.. What's your address so I can send my guitar to be painted by you biggrin.gif

hehe

Posted by: at lights end Sep 3 2008, 04:10 PM

whoa that does look awesome. can't wait to see it with all the strings and hardware on.

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Sep 3 2008, 04:13 PM

well, that's one step more, I hope now people can see better what will be the final result wink.gif

Juan, when do you think the guitar will be completed? How much work left man? smile.gif

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Sep 4 2008, 04:41 PM

well, tomorrow I'll varnish it !! then I'll do a "shielding" and I try to record it in a lesson, then put EMG, MIDI pickup and if I can I'd like to add a Killswitch... but I don't know if I will be able to to this work !! haha, I need to find more information on the Internet.

A killswitch is easy to add to be honest. Very simple electronics.

yeah, that's what I think... just put a knob and soldering 2 cables...

Juan, Im sorry I wrote what I did. I did come across alot worse than I needed to in order to express my opinion. I dont think that your a bad artist and to be honest dude my opinion really doesnt matter anyway. One negative comment out of 11 pages of positive responses isnt bad at all. Your the one with the guitar and as long as your happy with it thats all that matters. Maybe Ill post a picture of the guitar I just finished and you can tell me what you think. I hope theres no hard feelings man, take care.

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Sep 5 2008, 10:00 PM

thanks Jeff, don't worry, it's your opinion and I respect it, for sure wink.gif
I'd like to see your pic !!! I suppose it will be amazing biggrin.gif

Well, another pic here: now with the shielding smile.gif (well, the first steps...)
