How to Build m9th Arpeggios

In this music theory lesson, we’ll be digging into learning how to build minor 9th arpeggios from both a m7th and Aeolian perspective.

The first way that we’ll explore in learning how to build m9th arpeggios, is to take a m7 arpeggio, and we simply add a 9th on top of those 4 notes.

So, if you have a Cm7 chord, and you want to make a Cm9, you just add the note D, the 9th from the key of C minor.

Here is how that looks like on paper for you to check out.

If you need a quick review of m7th arpeggios, check out the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=48455 article on the GMC Forum.

The second way that you can use to build a m9th arpeggios, is to take the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th of the Aeolian mode as those are the 5 notes you need to build a m9th arpeggio.

This means that if you want to build a Cm9 arpeggio, as in the example below, you can take the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th notes from the C Aeolian mode and those are the notes you need for this arpeggio, C-Eb-G-Bb-D.

Here is that comparison on paper.

Test Your Theory Knowledge!

Now that you have learned how to build Minor 9th Arpeggios, try writing out a number of them in the comments section below to get some practice with these shapes.

If you write out some, or all, of the different m9th Arpeggios I’ll be happy to look over your work and make sure you’re on the right track.

Yeah you are mostly good this time. Remember, you can't repeat notes and you can't mix sharps in flats, so Abm9 would be Ab Cb Eb Gb Bb.

Also, your 5ths became #11's after Ab on the way down, you might want to back and check those as you wrote G Bb C# F A for example, but Gm9 is G Bb D F A.

Hope that helps!
