So I made a biggest fail in my life - I signed up into french singing contest - the former plan was, to go there with my friend, me playing guitar, her singing - I had the whole song ready, it was about clouds and had even a solo written down... Now I found out, I have to od it alone (singing and playing at once) and the song topic is "Pour toi" (For you)

I am desperate, cos I am not good at singing/playing at once (but can do some easy open chords patterns as in Wish you were here by Pink floyd etc..) and I am primarily a electric guitar player:)

Well my plan is, to do some sort of SRV/Hendrixish kind of song with easy rythm playing, when I sing and in breaks having some more complicated fills - problem is I am not too fond on this writing this kind of songs.

I need ANY help you can provide me.. please dont let me down - there will be whole our class watching and I have just 10 days. I already have a few ideas ATM, but I am at school now so I cant test them..

Any help (chord progressions, fills, good keys to use...) will be appreciated greatly smile.gif

Do some 12 bar blues man. A, D, E and you'll be fine. You can write 100 songs on the topic "For You" if you keep it blues smile.gif You can do a slightly different chorus section, like change 1 or 2 chords (maybe go to F# minor) and then go back. Solo is not that important if you have to play and sing at the same time. Good luck

What exactly is a 12 bar blues? I just know its kind of rythm accompanient in blues, jazz and rock, often in shuffle rythm, long 12 chords with turnaround (dont know any tho) on the last chord, returning to tonic:D But practically I know nothing:D

You can do 12 bars blues progression, or you can use standard A minor progression, in open position, like A minor D minor, start with that, then add some chord you like, add some strumming, rhythm patterns, experiment, and you'll be fine. Keep it simple!

personally, for such a short time to do it, i'd write something with 3 chords for the verse, 4 chords for the chorus and a very simple structure

such as...

Am, Am, C, G - verse x 8
Em, Em, F, F - Bridge x 2
C, G, Am, F - chorus x 4

just put some finger picking in and a few fills here and there and ur sorted

as for lyrics, its very simple for that topic...

heres some that im singing along while playing those chords (as an example ofcourse tongue.gif)

and now i cant believe
how i couldnt see
whats become of me
oh whats become of me

and how i could have known
i wouldnt be all alone
oh i cant believe
now ive set you free

Bridge
now that things have changed
your the one that kept me sane
now our time has past
its time i...

CHORUS
let gooooooo
oh im waiting for the change
Im staring into darkness and back
agaaaaaaaaain
i threw myself away
discarded from your world
for you

they were just random lyrics off the top of my head so some of them dont make sense...

hope this helped smile.gif

Oh munta, thats really great - May I use this and claim it as mine (the chord pattern for chorus and bridge) at that contest (It has to be mine composition...)? I will maybe transpose it a bit and noodle around with those chords, but generaly, thats awesome idea:)

There are thousands of blues songs on the same chord progression so you can feel free to put your own lyrics and claim it's 100% yours smile.gif Make some kind of chorus with 1 or 2 more chords added and go back to this groove on the verse. Good luck

Simple 12 bar blues should work as it has only 3 chords and very nice form that keeps looping around.

For example

A7 / A7 / A7 / A7/
D7/ D7/ A7/ A7/
E7/ D7/ A7/ E7//

These are all dominant chords but you can also play power chords if you want to !

Listen to Johny B Good to give you some ideas for cool blues singing and playing wink.gif

haha, u dont have to ask to use a chord progrssion, those ones have been used multiple times by uncountable bands lol

for the style of music, listen to 3 doors down, they use those chord progressions in a few songs... just add your own picking style, add a few licks here and there when ur not singing and you have your very own song.... even add a breakdown if you want...

but dont use those lyrics i have wrote, im gonna make something of them lol. but its not hard to write ur own, just start singing random words that you can connect to what your writing about.

if its gotta be about "for you" then think what it could be... the one i have wrote there is about leaving a woman because you think she'd have a better life without you.
it could be about doing something amazing for someone, or you may even die for someone... theres so many topics.

once youve chosen the exact topic your gonna write about and figured out what you want the song to be about, all you have to do is sing along while you play the basic chords with random words that can join with the song, even if they dont fit yet... you can clean them up later and make them make more sense once you have the basics down.

hope this helps smile.gif

Munta - no worries, ifs FRENCH singing contest, so your lyrics would be of no use anyways and I doubt, it would rhyme when translated:) And that tip about signing random words - since I can barely say few sentences in french, this wont work, I am afraid:D I guess I will take a dictionary and just shoot random words, that are somewhere close to topic and glue them someway:D

I think this song is a really cool option to sing.

You always can lower the melody an octave to be more confortable.
But it's an easy one it only has 4 chords.
