Hi

Okay so im not finding a buyer for my peavey classic 30. What you guys think of it. Maby i should just keep it and get decent effects for it. I have a tonebone hot brittish ( Does not sound nice through the amp ), TS-808 and a line6 echo moddler.

What do you guys think of the rocktron rampage distortion instead of the tonebone ?

I have one too and it's simply great for blues and jazz tones, even some rock but if you want to use it for hard rock or metal you really should look for another amp.

You wouldn't recommend just putting a nice distortion infront ?

Still the Classic 30 is set up for blues/jazz with speaker and tubes. But sure, you'd be able to come far with a good distortion pedal.

Sigh i will just go to this other music shop, see if they will give me a good trade in for the classic 30 and the roland cube. Then i can get a decent amp

Hey, the Peavey Classic 30 is more than decent, it's a TERIFFIC amp

You will probably realize that in a few years, after selling it

Haha seems like my finances are buggered, i cant buy a new amp. Ill just get a nice distortion to put in front in the meanwhile. Even tho the tonebone hot british sounds horrible through it in my opinion. Maby just a rocktron rampage or something. Ill just keep it cos i cant get enough to make the sale worth my while.

Okay so it seems that the classic 30 does not even take a rocktron rampage distortion. I must just get another amp for heavier sounds

Im not familier with the peavey clasic amp.I do know that the man that started peavey originally never wanted to make guitars and just wanted to stick to amps.I have seen some really sorry peavey gear before along with great gear.If this amp is a higher priced one im sure it's great because when they want to make a good product they acomplish it.I will tell you the peavey raptor amp and blazer (small low priced amps) sound very terrible,almost the junkiest thing i ever heard.

What do you mean "it doesn't take"? The classic 30 has a great clean channel so it should fine. Did you put it infront of the amp like guitar->dist->amp or put it in the loop? I'd keep it infront of the amp.

I'm using a distotion pedal in front of it and it sounds teriffic, I have a Gollmer Fat Dist which works very well. But i've also tried a Digitech Grunge pedal, sure it sounds good as long as I'm playing but it's crazy when I don't touch the strings it makes everything scream.
Is that what happens for you too?


Yeah I've heart that too, about bad soldering etc in Peavey amps but I never had any problems with my classic 30. But I also have a "backstage" solid state amp which I wouldn't even waste a single match to set it on fire on, it's not that it doesn't work cos it does, it just sound bad.

A Peavey Classic 30 is an EXCELLENT foundation to build almost any sound off of. I'd recommend getting a good Overdrive pedal to put in front of it. Make sure you lay off the preamp gain, and just crank the hell outta the Master Volume. With a good pedal like a TS808 or similar and the volume cranked you should get some SWEET Powertube saturation.

If your looking for cold metal sounds be sure to ride the Gain on the pedal a little more and cut your mid's out of the amp EQ.

Trust me, if you can't get a sound you like out of a Classic 30 then your settings are whacked or the tubes need replaced. Cheers!

Its just, when i use distortion i like a more smooth non crunchy distortion. But it tends to become crunchy with some distortion pedals.



Stratman, you say i must rather use the overdrive channel and just drop the gain to get a clean sound out of it ? And then push some pedals through it ?

Classic 30 is an excellent amp, with a tonebone pedal you should be in heaven!

However the tonebone brittish (wish is an absolutely fantastic pedal) isn't as metal as the other tonebone pedal, which is based on "american metal sounds" (I think it's called "classic" or similar).

So get yourself any metal pedal and you have one of the best practice amps available!

I know its a great amp. Its got one of the best clean sounds i have ever heard. Just struggling to get the sound i want. Maby i should check the valve in the tonebone

Yeah i think the accoustics in my room are a bit weird. Makes things sound bad even tho it is not. Ill go play around at my friends recording studio and see what happens.
