GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Introducing Me

Hey all - I was invited to intro myself so here goes: started playing at 14, 1st prof. gig at 17 with Witchkiller onwards to 21 with various other local outfits. Then had a decision point: University or guitar. Sorry to say that I chose University and locked up (literally) my 69 strat! But the story does not end there.....after a few decades of establishing a career and family I dusted off my strat, and bought a jackson soloist as my belated homage to RR. Now as a consultant, I have plenty of free time to explore all the resources available to guitar players like GMC. I am finding it a little bit overwhelming like the proverbial kid in a candy shop. I am really impressed with the theoretical depth of many guitarist out there and I am trying to learn my triads, arppegios, scales and chords and fit it all together musically. Took a few lessons from a jazz wizzo which was good for developing theory but didn't help me master Sails of Charron, slap arrpegios all over crazy train or deconstruct Govan's solo magic. Sorry for going on so long...Question: how do you make a request for a particular lesson? thx Bruce

Hi Bruce, how's it going? Your story has similarities to mine. Glad to hear you have picked it back up and are moving in the right direction.

A lot of times you can go to the instructor's board and make a topic - or just post in a previous thread for requesting.

Welcome to GMC Bruce!
Brandon gave you the answer...just start a thread on an instructors board. Maybe check out their lessons first to see which one suits your preferred style best.

Here is my request: I would like to work on legato, the kind of smooth violin like legato played by holdsworth, allen hines, or marshall harison. I cannot find any lesson on GMC, though there are a few brief moments when Stephane on 'creative arppegio phtasing' seems to be going there. Is it acceptable to post a youtube link to illustrate what I am talking about?

Ok, here it is. This playing style is captivating....Harison calls this a lesson, but it is too fast for me to appreciate. I would like to learn what a chopin-esque pedal tone with only hammer-ons, no pull-offs

There may be whispers of an Uli thing coming soon...
The kind of fusion legato that you're after reminds me of some of Juan Cortes's lessons. See what you think:

Ya, I though he used 'heavy metal legato' in a negative sense despite some pretty tasty stuff out there. Will take a look at the stuff you mention. If you are going to post Uli's SOC intro solo, I would be interested in how you do the ascending diminished sequence at the end. I use all 4 fingers but have to concentrate real hard to keep up to tempo. Cheers, Bruce.

A lot of technique building to prepare you attack all of the killer lessons @ GMC with a good foundation in physical mechanics of playing.

Yeah, metal is just different. Fusion isn't the be all and end all of music
It won't be actually from Sails of Charon but I'll take a look at that solo as well and see what's going on
He doesn't get much mention from the younger generation of players but people like Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen etc all cite Uli as a great influence.

Looking forward to it; BTW I liked your legato lesson - I am trying to incorporate the 6 note phrasing you use into how I routinely play legato. Cheers, bruce.

That's great.. I hope it inspires you to come up with some great licks
I find the shapes very useful for navigating around the neck.
