I got a knock on my door at 11pm on Friday night by a gentleman saying "Dude, some of us have to to goto work on saturday too" ..

So it seems I'll be spending a lot of time playing on a headphone now. So looking to buy one GOOD quality headphone for recording/ practice (priority) as well as regular playback (not that much important but doesn't hurt).

I've been saving for one, so the max I can spend on it is $200 - $250 . This does not mean that I have to spend that much.. I hear a lot of $100 headphones are equally good, if not better.

I've gone through a few old threads and sennheiser & AKG seem to be the popular choices but I'm quite confused on the model.

Other Requirements:

Long Cable - will be using it while recording vocals too so have to stand and move a bit
Good flat sound as I will be using it to monitor as well as mixing purposes

So can someone please help me out and suggest ONE headphone which is versatile and the one that you are PROUD to own. Coz i'd rather have ONE good quality headphone than have 5 average ones.

DT880 are excellent but there are several different versions about. I think the standard version is the 250 ohm one (which is still very good)- the better version is the 600 ohm but it's hard to find and costs more like 5-600USD.

If you look around you might just be able to get a deal on the 250 ohm one that may bring it in to your price range. If not the 770 is also very good.

I'd go for a AKG headset, no doubt
I have tested a few professional studio headsets, but I've always liked my AKGs better for reference when mixing!

Great quality and sound, you can't go wrong

Try some out, get a comfortable pair since you might be sutck with them on your head for hours.
AKG works well for me, Sennheiser not so much. Regarding how comfortable they are.

I play with Sennheiser HD201's. They were quite inexpensive, and I can't believe the sound quality. I have never tried $500 headphones, so they may sound like crap compared to the more expensive ones...but I love mine!

AKG 141 and AKG 141 MK II are radio and studio standards, you won't regret buying them.

Thank you all for the fantastic ideas and suggestions.... I've narrowed it down to AKG K141 MK II Vs AKG K240 MK II

I'm inclining towards 141. Am in inclining towards the correct one?

141S is good in the 100USD price range. Just a couple of things:- some people find them uncomfortable to wear so try them out; they aren't neutral. Whilst many recording studios use them they're a bit like the Yamaha NS10s monitors - you can tell who has monitored on them and them alone as the recording reflects the tonal balance and sound stage...

Great choice. I have K141S and I like the their descrete sound. They are not for mixing, only for stereo width and other checkups, but they have a very pleasant sound and I can work with them with no fatigue for long periods of time. I also use them for watching movies, they are excellent for that purpose too. Listening music is very good, although I prefer speakers for this always.

Just to note, if you have sensitive ear shells, these headphones can cause fatigue, because they press hard on the ears. Cushions are soft and nice.

Have any of you had the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro? I'm considering those as well. I've only seen good reviews on them. I'd like to hear some negative things as well (of course, it could be there are none, but I won't believe that). I don't mind the spiral cable at all, just reminds me of some really nice headphones I had years back

I just ordered a AKG 141 MK II
I tested a Bose QuietComfort in a shop (without knowing the price) and the feeling of music was sooo much fun so I decided to buy me a headphone for Christmas, but the Bose ones are too expensive for me, I think the AKG has a nice price/quality relation.
