I usually start by finding out what the student can play and what he knows. All my students so far wanted to play some riffs and crazy metal solos and that's where i had to explain them that it will take them some time before they are able to play something decent. Than i usually start with basics of AP as 99% of people can't pick properly if they are self taught. Than come scales, basic scale boxes, and that's where people usually give up because they all think that you can play without practicing so right now i have no students at all

I have had the same problem with teaching. Each and every student wanted to learn some licks right away. THe best way to overcome this is to show them (10 minutes at the end of each lesson) some licks that they can use. I `ve had some cases in the begining when people just quit because i didn`t show them enoguh of the interestnig stuff.
Also the people who come and ask for a lesson are often not very motivated to play the guitar, or motiveted in a short term way. The challenge is sometimes to keep them coming, because they must learn also to love the playing. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE
