GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Where To Start?

Greetings everyone, new member and a happy hobby guitar player here.

I was wondering if you guys could tell me where & how to begin my training. I've seen people, here in the forums, talking about beeing on certain levels of a course. All I can find are the video lessons in the video lessons tab (wich by all means are fabulous), but I can't seem to find any of the aforementioned levels of a course.

Say I was a beginner when it comes to shredding, but had some experience when it comes to acoustic guitar playing, and I would like some lessons in both. Where would I begin?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hey Blurgh and welcome to GMC

Well there are a couple of places you can start. There is a 6 step beginner course that takes you from Power Chords to Barre chords basically. Great place to start if your just beginning on your guitar journey.

But as you mentioned in your example if you have some experience in acoustic but want to learn shred, well on the main page there is a section in the middle that says START HERE This is basically your own lesson planner. You can pick beginner, then shred, then create and you'll get a list of lessons to try out. You can save this lesson plan as well. It's a great feature. All the lessons have a difficulty rating associated with them aswell.

I hope this is helpful to you. I'd also suggest looking at the Theory lessons available here at GMC if you haven't already.

and after that try using the lesson planner on the first page or the search box for specifics

As all said above and my best bet would be to use the lesson planer to get some good suggestions

Adding to what people said, theory is not mandatory, but it helps a lot on making you learn faster. This one place to start:

You are not supposed to read it all at once, but try to read a little bit every day and you will see how that help you in no time.

I made kind of "same path" as you as 3 years ago I decide to learn lead after years of playing acoustic strumming chords. Try seeing the basic theory around scales.

i suggest you start familiarizing with your fretboard, play 1234 2345 3456 4567 ... on each string, and use your 4 fingers, that can be really good for your fingers
then try learning an easy "doable" solo, you can check out the difficulty, try to pick one that you like and that isn't too hard for you
(even if you can't do it, practice slowly and i'm sure you'll progress in no time)
