Guitar Lessons Roadmap / Outline For Long Term Options

I am stuck with this question and have not really found an answer anywhere(And I have spent a good amount of time looking for it on GMC):

When teaching students, is there a general order in which skills are taught(ie - first learn alternate/speedpicking, then pentatonics , etc). The lesson plans posted basically cover learning a particular skill for short term goal, but do not give an overall roadmap of what skills should be taught in what order necessary to be an overall good player(Not a specific style). Now I know this can be subjective, but there must be a general consensus in the guitar teacher community of what skills are crucial and general order to introduce them.

I have done the beginner kickoff, working on alternate picking and pentatonic/blues lessons, but not sure what logical step is next. Its great that there are zillions of lessons on GMC, but for someone who is not too experienced in learning guitar(like me) it can be overwhelming. I know that teachers that teach guitar for a living must have an idea of the overall order of skills they want to teach their students in order to progress(either written, or in their mind), so I am hoping that someone can share this with the group, and maybe even have it added to the Beginner Kick off lesson outline. I have tried to just grab a lesson that is of interest to me(Trying to pick a lower difficulty lesson) but many of these are still beyond my skill(I'm lame).

If this is not available, can someone recommed a really good Guitar book that covers alot of topics from beginning to intermediate, and I'll just use the Table of Contents as a guide to learning GMC lessons.

I would say pentatonic scales, chords, and alternate picking are among things people tend to learn first. This of course doesn't mean you have to focus just on that - try to focus on a more broader list of techniques over longer periods of time, and start small day by day approach.

Also try my pentatonic series lesson, they cover rhythm and pentatonic scales nicely

i really think, you hit the point. i play guitar for 21 years now but i always felt, that i miss guidelines of what to learn when and in what order. i think i wasted much time cause i didn´t have a greater plan on developing my skills and now i see that i can play difficult stuff but there are many basic things that are hard for me (i know my pentatonics but still do not get the concept of scales very well).

maybe we all could post some lesson orders/combinations that worked well and share it - so little path that will lead to a goal.
i know that there are some lessons, that are part of a series but it shure would be helpful if we shared our experience.

Maybe I'll start your Pentatonic Series but I just finished Kris' One on One Pentatonics(1-3), and was trying to figure out the next step, learning something new. What scares me is there are some Level 2 lessons that I find really hard for me, which makes me believe I am missing some foundational skills as the poster up above said as well.

Some level 2 lessons are hard for me as well. But, by challenging yourself and by practicing these lessons slowly your playing will increase. I also find it useful to practice with the backing track.

One thing I do for myself while I´m trying to get the minor pentatonic boxes into my fingers is by tabbing them out completely in guitar pro and starting with box 1 at 1st to 7th fret and following the boxes after one another. What I do is increase the tempo gradually, starting at 60 bpm and just increasing the speed with 1 each day.

you can learn a lot from a few lessons, you can learn even more if you practice several lessons about the same subject.

and always learn at your own speed. deep down inside you know you know what speed is best for you.

I never taught guitar to anyone (I still have much to learn myself ) , but I believe this is a good order, at least that makes some sense to me:

1) Power chords
2) Basic Chords (triads and tetrads)
3) Pentatonic scale - alternate picking
4) Minor/Major scale - alternate picking
5) Legato
6) Bending / vibrato
7) Blues/rock licks
8) Arpeggio, sweep-picking
9) Advanced chords
10) Harmonic minor
11) Modes

When practice becomes a chore, just take it easy and try to learn some fun song, maybe even some acoustic stuff. Change can always mean a lot to escape from every day routines.
