GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Much Love For The Rgt42fm

Posted by: Todd Simpson Sep 25 2017, 05:52 AM

I made a post today in one of the Ibby groups on FB that I follow and it started a flood of love for the RGT42FM. It did my heart good I must admit smile.gif More than 150 folks gave her the thumbs up (should have a horns high option on FB imho) and many folks said that they had never heard of the RGT42 AT ALL!!! This really took me off guard a bit as I've been such a fan of them for so long.

To get a neck through body Ibanez, with a Flamed Maple Top, Locking Trem, Mahogany body, etc. These days, if bought new, would set you back some SERIOUS coin. However, find a decent RGT42 in a guitar store or on ebay/reverb.com etc., you can get a killer quality instrument for less than the price of a somewhat crappy new Ibby Gio. so for anyone looking for a new axe, please do check out the RGT42FM series, which they don't make anymore of course. Like most of the best Ibby's, you have to dig around a bit for them. These were ONLY MADE FOR 3 YEARS!!

Which is also something of a pattern with Ibanez. Make a killer guitar, for less than 5 years, so that there are very few of them still around in good shape. The last year of production was 2006!!!! So more than 10 years ago. Yet the one in this picture, was in practically new condition. It still had the plastic scratch protectors on the back plates! So I know from experience that they are out there smile.gif

The pickups are probably the weakest spot on the guitar. However, they do pair well with the wood IMHO and at high gain levels, E.G. most of the Metal you are probably gone play with it, they sound fine smile.gif Here is an example of the bridge pickup doing it's thing.

Can also do a mid gain thing pretty well, here is the "coil tap"ish setting using the middle position on the five way switch.

The love fest continues as this one post is heading past 200 likes on the Ibby Group I belong to on facebook. The posts thread is crazy long as well. I didn't realize there was this much love for the RGT42 series. I understand it as this axe would run you a couple thousand these days imho if Ibanez was still selling them. Finding a Neck Through Body, Ibby with a Locking Trem, and Mahogany Body is tough to do these days, even at the "Prestige" level of Trim. This guitar, today, would be just crazy pricey to produce which is probably why there isn't one like it in the current Ibby lineup as far as I can find. If anyone can find one, please tell me. I have had 3 of these and have sold all 3 as I get crazy good offers on them after I just clean them up a bit. I'm now looking for #4! smile.gif
