GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Building Speed

Posted by: RyanAW Jan 6 2008, 12:06 AM

I'm looking for an effective way to build alternate picking speed(especially left hand speed). I want to build overall speed and not for any particuler piece. I've been working with a few of the lessons and they seem to help. I know this will take a lot of time and patience. I'm just looking for a What is the most effective way to go about doing this.

For me I have built speed up literally by practicing alternate picking exercises from the various GMC instructors.

Literally I just work on them slowly for months and this eventually turns into controlled speed. Remember controll is the name of the game here!! This is one of the messages kris gives and its more important than speed at first IMO. Of course speed soon follows as a bi product ! biggrin.gif

Mat is very right. Pavel's Ionian Scale Speedpicking lesson helped me alot for gaining speed when alternate picking.

i'm beghiner but i'm working just on Kris 101 speed picking 2 and i'm try to stay on max 2-3 repeating exersizes and thats help a lot

actualy the exersize {main} on 101 speedpicking 1 when you play triplets note is funt to play and you can pretty good control the speed ...after aroun 2 month of doing this i'm gain the speed from 40bpm to 70bpm

is not crazy speed but for beghiner isn't bad cool.gif

You have to start REALLY REALLY slow. Only then will you get REALLY REALLY fast.

Welcome to the quest for speed biggrin.gif
Lessons here at GMC are excellent for building up speed, just keep playing maybe with metronome and speed WILL come !!
I suggest you play some chromatic scale exercises too... They sure helped me a lot! Plus you could end up playing an electrified version of Flight of the Bumblebee if you get good at that!! cool.gif cool.gif cool.gif

I have found that you can pretty much tell if you have sped up too quickly because it will just sound noisey instead of clean. In which case I just drop back down a few bpm untill the speed comes naturally smile.gif

Either way there are so many lessons that can help you here !!

you have to practice on the scales starting with all Major scales from C.....B then do the minor then minor harmony and others

There is no best way really. You have to find it for yourself. I know it sounds corny but it is the truth. Find a system that works best with you and practice as much as you can and the result will come in time.

Thanks for the advice everyone. biggrin.gif

I have been goin through verious speed picking lessons on this site and they have probably been the most helpful on my journey so far. I have found that if you focus on control and smaller movements that speed will come.

Thanks again. Any more suggestions would be gladly accepted.

Absolutely, control is the key here ! It is much better to practice slowly for hours and gain control then speed follows as a result. Look out for any noise passages and keep working on them till they are clean wink.gif

Speed picking is much like playing rythmn guitar. When you started strumming guitar at first, you didn't hit all the chords very well, correct? What was it that made you strum the chords better and made your rythmn better? Practicing s-l-o-w-l-y and building speed over time.

Metronome is an absolute must if you ever want to reach a higher-than-average speed. smile.gif

Start at whatever speed you can play the iff or run in a relaxed and clean manner - any faster is a waste, don;t pay too much attention to what it says on the metronome as that figure will be moving upwards if you practice right. Playing cleanly and relaxed is the best guide, and then increase speed as you feel comfortable.

I start some stuff as low as 20 if I am having trouble with it.
