This video is a bit longer than most of these as I wanted to discuss picking in a bit more detail. It's easy to get your picking upto crazy fast, shreddy, Yngwie Level, if you just start from the right place/approach. If you start with poor technique, you will hit a wall and prevent yourself from attaining your potential. I see this all the time. Folks spend a lot of time repeating bad technique and have a real hard time changing. So they get stuck at a certain spot/speed. Easy way to fix that smile.gif Watch this vid.

*You can use any pick strike pattern you like. The point of this one is to keep your palm planted on the bridge and use your thumb and first finger to move the pick.

*USE YOUR PINKY!!!!!!!! (Don't try to use your first three fingers on your left hand.)

*NOTE: I'm playing it TWICE in the video but you need only play it ONCE for your vid per the Guitar Pro file. Feel free to loop it if you like smile.gif

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS : Keep this one under control. Keep it clean. Repeat as needed smile.gif

Here's my first take buddy. I think I tried to push the speed a little too much for me.

This is a brisk take!! You got 95 percent of this on the first go. I did notice on your way down the first time, on the A string, you missed a note or two. Also, if you run it twice as in the video, you need only strike each note once, including the ending note. If you run it once, you can play it just like the tab. If you run it twice, just use one note on the turn around point on the low E and on the high E. You may be playing this just a pinch fast. I like to see you pushing the edge of your ability as that's where growth happens!!! Maybe back of just a bit though and play a few bpm slower to gain a touch more control. I think you got this!!!!

Hello Todd,

here is Take 2, I do various speeds, at one point going a little too quick. The comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing grows there wink.gif

Apologies for the spec of dust on the lens rolleyes.gif Something is a bit dodgy with the first note, it's weird.

Both wet and dry files are in your folder on my OneDrive. Let me know if you no longer need these wink.gif

Nice!! This is what I'm talking about. I like how you are pushing the edge of your ability but also back off enough to get a very clean pass at it. This lick makes a great warm up lick and moving it around the neck will work your fingers and your picking. The further you push it up the neck, the trickier it gets as you have less space to work with. Having gotten a good handle on it where there is plenty of space to work with, try to push it up the neck and maintain your pace and especially maintain your precision. Well done on your execution here! Picking, hand synch, all on point. You've got this down!!
You just...

Well played!! You tore in to this one like a pro. Went at full tilt and pulled it off. Good technique on picking through every string and good job on keeping hand synch! This drill traverses every single string on purpose. I want your hands to have to go through every single string up and down. Also, I gave you the same three notes all the way up and down to get you to focus on the picking. This is a good chance to see if your hand synch needs work or if your picking stumbles after long scale runs. You didn't fall victim to ether one. Well played!! Also, NICE IBBY!!!!!

Nice! This one seems like it's going to be very straight forward at first right? Then you start playing it and all the sudden your fingers are telling you that your playing something much harder to push through that it might seem. On paper, this is a very simple bit. In practice, it tends to feel like a lot of work. It's hard to play this one very fast even though it reads very simple on tablature. It's due to the alternate picking required that tends to require a lot of focus and reduces overall speed. As a result, it's not a shred lick, even though it sorta seems like one at first. People are often tempted to try to rush this an it falls apart. You keep it under control. Nice!!

This is a CLINIC on picking technique and palm muting put on by mister BEN. It's exactly what I'm always banging on about. Notice how he never lifts his mute. Also, notice how he rotates his wrist to go from low to high back to low string instead of dragging the hand up and down and thus lifting the mute. Also, the hand synch is spot on. In addition, pick articulation is very impressive.

I continue to be impressed by your technique and your ability. I've seen you get better over the years and you were darn good even when I first saw you play. In other words you just..
