Hey guys! I'm pretty new here (a couple of weeks) and I have a question concerning the way how to practice. I've been playing the guitar for about 9 months now so I'm still at the beginner level. My question is if I should practice only one technique (like I do at the moment with alternate picking) until I feel really comfortable with it or can I practice more than just one technique? so is it still effective when I learn for example alternate picking and sweeping and maybe one more technique? That all depends on what you want to achieve ... for any technique, the more you practice the better you'll get. If you practice 3 things for the same amount of time as you practice one thing, those three things will progress at 1/3 of the speed they would have if you had practiced full time. (Actually that's not totally true as a lot of techniques have side effects of helping you with other things, but you get the idea). So, do you want to alternate pick like a madman, Sweep like Yngwie, or be a slightly less accomplished but well balanced all-rounder? My advice for what its worth would be to pick 2 or 3 core techniques, and keep them on your list of things to practice, and mix up a little what you do each day to keep it interesting. So maybe one day you do alternate, tapping and sweeping, maybe the next day you concentrate on sweeping. Also, remember to structure your practice the way that Kris suggests in his lessons - 1/3 metronome, 1/3 jamming and playing to tracks, 1/3 learning something new - that's a great balance and mixes discipline and interest very well. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
