Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Rocker Riff 2 by Gabriel Leopardi

I messed up the fast lick in the end but I think the rest turned out OK. I'm starting to question my vibrato - I know that it's more correct to let the note ring out first and then move into vibrato, and I think I do that at slower tempos, but I kinda like how it sounds when starting vibrato almost immediately at faster rock solos like this. Is that always considered bad style?

Hi mate! Nice to find this lesson here!

I like your tone and attitude here. This take is very close, I only thing that you need to improve your overall timing. I notice that you tend to rush a bit some parts of the riff and solo, mostly those that involve hammer on or pull off. Now that you are more comfortable with the notes, put your focus on groove and try to follow it with your whole body while playing.

I also think that your guitar tuning is not precise here. I don't notice it when playing the riffs, but it appears during the solo. Maybe this is a calibration issue? Check it out!

Regarding your vibrato question, I don't think that you have problems with the technique. The only part that need work is when you add vibrato to your bending. Starting vibrato too soon is a possibility which makes everything sound more aggressive and nervous. It's cool as an expressive tool, but if you do it all the time it can become less expressive and more annoying. If you listen to guitarists like Satriani, or even Angus Young, you'll notice how they use different types of vibrato to make their solos more expressive.

Cool!

You obviously know the notes and you have the technique down - now you just 'gotta play like you mean it'.

What this means is to try to think less and instead try to groove along. If you can do this, you will automatically play less ahead of the beat - and instead find the "pocket". Because this is what makes things groove!

Sometimes just moving your whole body to the beat as you play, can help you achieve this. Often at the expense of technique / precision, but that's ok - it will all come with practice.

Keep up the good work, you get a 7 from me!

Hey there!

First good impression on your take is that you play like you mean it. Very confident right hand playing affects the tone and timing. Unfortunately the timing in this case goes slightly off. As Gabriel said - you tend to rush...maybe it's some kind of excitment of playing. When we dig into song very well it sometimes happen smile.gif

When you start the solo part, there is something wrong with pitch happening. Maybe measure adjustment needed or the string has dropped the pitch due to some fair strength of picking on the rhyhtm part. Worth to check both

If you listen carefully, Gabriel is using a blues-rock related quartertone bend ornamnet on almost every g note on E6 string. You seemed to forget about it.

As for vibrato, It feel like it's a little overdone comparing to original Gab's video. Still for this particular song it does not hurt though wink.gif

You right hand is very irregular, random pickign direction can be noticed. When you look at how Gab is playing you will notice that his hand alternately moves down and up. When he attacks the string, the direction is dictated by natural hand pulse/rhyhtm in that spot in the bar. This way thign become more cooperative with "the nature" as breathing or dancing - constant balance between tension and release that makes things not onyl feel better but groove better with the band/track smile.gif

At the final blues lick with bend see what is the difference. You try alternately pick while it's a down down up pattern.

These are the things you could fix to make it closer to original. It doesn't change the fact that from the musical point of view your take is pleasant to listen and enjoyable smile.gif
