How Long To Spend On A Lesson

Hi all,

Right now I am stuck in some ways on the beginner scales lesson. I learned the scale patterns, but I seem to have hit a wall on how fast I can play them properly. I just started working with a metronome two days ago, but so far I am still in a rut. I'm wondering at what point I should move to the next lesson, or if I should move on at all.

Thanks

Well I'm not an expert but I say you should because you should have a couple of things to practice rather then spending all your time learning scales. Your practice should be something like the first 20 mins spent on scales, another on learning some licks or other techniques that you want to master... etc. So you said that you hit a road block but after a couple of days doing this, your speed should increase and you will notice it. Hope this help.

I think you should take another lesson because you can't achieve huge progress in terms of speed within just a couple of days! speed develops over time. so still play these patterns in your practicing periods, but also learn new stuff like some new techniques!

hope this helps a little bit

If you can play it perfect...then your good....like they siad above speed comes over time....with lots and lots of practice..just kinda fill your practice session up..with different licks....songs.....techinques....scales..and everything....and practice that...until you have them perfect....then kinda move on..to the next......or u can kidna go everyother day...on 1 thing..and the day that you dont practice that 1 technique.....practice...another 1 u want to master.............its realy all up to you though.......and again what they said up there...speed comes voer time...with lots of practice...and i mean LOTS....so dont except to be like....yngwie malmsteen..in like 2 days of practiceing...that 1 thing........so yea....the moral of this long post though is

fill up your practice schedule..and change it whenever you have those licks, and scales...or w/e..donw perfect....and go to the next..i guess!!!

thats kinda what i do..biggrin.gif

I usually watch trough the lesson untill I know how to play the material and understand it. Then I practice it now and then. I'm still working on the Sweeping excerises from Pavels lesson, and its been ages since I watched it. Been working on alot of other stuff aswell, I guess it doesnt hurt doing several lessons at once, but dont let it get too many! smile.gif

If you are fairly new to the instrument - the most important thing is to no loose motivation. Do whatever is needed for you to keep it up. smile.gif

You can always go back to that lesson later on...!

Some great advice from the MadAxeman there wink.gif This is a question asked an awful lot. I pesonally stick with the same lessons untill there instructor perfect - but ive been practicing seriously for a fair few months now.
Like Kris said,do what ever it takes to keep you interest in what your doing! In the beginning i was all over the place trying different things out and its a good way to start. Eventually if you like me youll want to perfect things before you move onto the next wink.gif Its all about haveing FUN!

Yes - on the other hand if you have been playing for a while and feel you have mainly "fooled around" - then it's probably a good idea to pick a lesson which looks doable and nail it!

I dread to think what path I would be on today Guitarwise if i hadnt seen banner for GMC. I know for a fact i would be economy picking, have no timeing, and probably be very frustrated with my Instrament. Learning about Alternate picking, timeing/Metronome practice, and scale knowledge right from the start really is a blessing! biggrin.gif

I now have the confidence to try anything, and I am even learning to read Musical notation, sweep pick and tap. Sorry going a little of subject here blink.gif

Well I spend about 20 mins or less on metronome then I start playing all sorts of songs. The one I am jamming on right now is Fur Elise by Beethoven. That one is great to master control on the higher frets which I have always had a problem with and playing notes and playing nots that are on multiple lines like

----------------------------e
----------------0-----------B
----------------------------G
----------------------------D
---------------14----------A
----------------------------E

Stuff like that is in the song a lot I love it, gives me a challenge. biggrin.gif

(I don't use a pick when I play this song so if you want pick skills I wouldn't suggest playing this song)

Not to say I don't practice pick skills its just this one is more for control.
